The Buhari led administration has Reiterated its commitments to work closely with other countries which share similar socio-economic objectives in order to increase economic opportunities, better and quality healthcare delivery to her citizens, according to Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.
Prof. Osinbajo stated this on Tuesday when he received, on a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa, Ambassador Dato’ Ku Jaafar Ku Shaari, Secretary General of the D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation.
The D-8 top official is in Nigeria as the Health & Social Protection Programme of the group is being established in the country.
According to the Vice President, while addressing the Secretary General “I want to congratulate you on the signing of the partnership agreement for the Health and Social Protection Programme. This is important for us and for all D-8 countries.
“We are all emerging economies, the whole question around health care, human capacity development is crucial for us, and I think it is appropriate that we devote the time and resources like we are currently doing.”
Speaking further on the focal areas of cooperation of the D-8, Prof. Osinbajo said, “We are hopeful that you will succeed in deepening the impact of the focal areas of trade, industry, energy and tourism, in all of our countries. We are happy that, working with the other countries, we can achieve our economic objectives.
“So, we are certainly looking forward to continue to work with the D-8. We are committed to the D-8 and expect that the forthcoming summit will expand the scope of work and deepen the achievements of the D-8.
Earlier in his remark, Ambassador Dato’ Ku Jaafar Ku Shaari who thanked Nigeria for hosting the secretariat of the D-8 Health and Social Protection Programme, said implementing programmes on health and poverty alleviation was key to the agenda of the organization.
He also spoke on the D-8’s forthcoming summit in Bangladesh later in the year where a new road map and plan of action for the actualization of the organization’s targets will be launched.
The D-8 countries include Bangladesh, Egypt, Nigeria, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan and Turkey with a combined population of approximately 1 billion covering an area of 7.6 million square kilometres and, 5% of world land area.

The immediate past Senior Special Assistant on Students Matters to Governor Yahaya Bello, has joined his voice with that of other sympathisers to commiserate with the families of the students, Felele community who were killed during a Tanker explosion which occurred at early hours on Wednesday in Lokoja, the state capital.
Joshua in a statement he personally signed and made available to News men prayed for eternal rest of those that died in the incident and fortitude to bear the loss on part of their families as well as quick recovery for the injured.
He equally condoled the government and people of Kogi State where he hail the prompt response of the government to the scene.

The newly returned Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has condoled with the government and people of Kogi State, over the tanker explosion which claimed many lives.
In the condolence message issued in Benin City, the state capital on Thursday, Obaseki said: “I condole with the government and people of Kogi State over the tanker explosion that claimed several lives.
“The explosion is an urgent reminder of the need to prioritize road and rail infrastructure development in Nigeria.”
The governor added: “Our hearts go out to families that lost persons and wish them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”
Just In: Another Gas Explosion Hits Lagos
A gas explosion is currently rocking one area at Iju Ishaga, Lagos State.
According to reports gathered, many of the people who involved in the incident were injured.
The Punch reports that buildings around the scene of the explosion suffered a partial collapse. As of the time of filing this report, the details of the gas explosion were sketchy An eyewitness, Ikechukwu, said, “We just heard a loud sound around 03.30 pm and we suddenly began to see smoke.
The explosion is massive and we are not sure of the casualties but many people are injured.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Agency, Nosa Okunbor, confirmed the incident.
