Buhari To IGP: Police Must Be Responsible To The People

In his response to the countrywide protests against police cruelty especially the conduct of some of its tactical units, President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Adamu, to make sure that personnel of the force remain fully responsible to the people.

Earlier Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on the direction of the President, presided over a meeting Friday afternoon at the Presidential Villa over the issue of SARS. The Inspector General of Police, Director General of the State Security Services and the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission were among top FG officials at the meeting.

The Presidential directive to the IGP is contained in a Tweet from the verified Twitter handle of President, posted Friday evening, in which he also affirmed the people’s right to public protest.

As claimed by the President, “I met again with the Inspector General of Police tonight. Our determination to reform the police should never be in doubt. I am being briefed regularly on the reform efforts ongoing to end police cruelty and unethical conduct, and make sure that the Police are fully responsible to the people.

“The IG already has my firm instructions to conclusively address the concerns of Nigerians regarding these excesses, and make sure erring personnel are brought to justice.”

While calling for peace and understanding by citizens, President Buhari said “I appeal for patience and calm, even as Nigerians freely exercise their right to peacefully make their views known.”

He said “the vast majority of men and women of the Nigeria Police Force are patriotic and committed to protecting the lives and livelihoods of Nigerians, and we will continue to support them to do their job.”

In a tweet and release shared with editors by the Vice President’s Spokesperson Mr. Laolu Akande later on Friday night, he make known that “at the direction of the President, Vice President Osinbajo met with the IGP, Mohammed Adamu, DG-SSS, Yusuf Bichi and the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission to review the next steps on conclusively addressing concerns of Nigerians on the excesses of SARS and other tactical police units.

“The Vice President and IGP later briefed Mr President who gave further directives to the IG on the matter.”

It will be recalled that the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, last Sunday, met with the IGP at his residence, to discuss the issue of brutality by some members the force’s tactical units like the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

After the meeting the IGP issued a statement banning further routine activities of the SARS.

Osinbajo later told State House correspondents that he was angry about the actions of some policemen, especially those attached to SARS, said to be
harassing and sometimes maiming and killing Nigerians, especially young people. He said such actions coming from those saddled with the responsibilities of protecting the citizens were unacceptable.

To put the record straight, we wish to respond as follows :
Hon Prince Isahq Shaibu Okolo is a man who has successfully distinguished in leadership position right from time till date and he is trusted with many award as a peace ambassador of the Local Government.

As a candidate for the fourth coming LGA election under the plat form of All progressives Congress (APC) security of lives and properties is his top priority and from the record, there have not be security breach in the LGA either with the Christian, Muslim, traditional worshipers and other religions in the area.

There was a directive from the Governor that, all forms of protest should stop and at about 4pm yesterday been 19th Oct 2020, a group of Christian’s were staging a procession and my attention was drown by the Divisional Police Office (DPO) Ayigba of which the protesters were advised to return to their churches to avoid the protest being hijack, it’s on this note that the police peacefully escort them to the church and return back to their station.

Prince Isahq is a member of peace and security committee Council which Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Dekina LGA branch has its representatives, the plot of land hosting CEFN church, Ayigba was his family land that was given to the church and both Christian, Muslim and other religions have been living together perfectly peaceful for ages. He urges the general public, most especially the christian community in the area to disregard the media propaganda of mischief makers.

The directive of His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello for no protest of any form still remain valid and subsisting till further notice and advice the public to go about their normal business. Thank you and remain peaceful.

IGP Confirms SWAT Training Begins Monday, Lists qualifications

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has confirmed that training for the newly-created Special Weapon and Tactics Team (SWAT), will begin on Monday.

Adamu, on Sunday, also listed the qualifications of officers to be trained in the new police tactical team to replace the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The IGP, in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, insisted no ex-SARS operatives were shortlisted in the SWAT team.

According to him, “the officers selected for the training are young, smart and energetic officers who have acquired not less than seven years working experience with clean service records – no pending disciplinary matters, no record of violation of rights of citizens or misuse of firearms – and are physically fit to withstand the rigour of SWAT Training and Operations.

“The selected officers shall be subjected to physical fitness test, medical and toxicology screening etc and those found to be unsuitable shall be discharged.”

Adamu promised Nigerians that the SWAT team “will operate within very high professional and ethical standards, rule of law and dictates of best international policing practices.”

Lagos CP, Hakeem Odumosu Charges ACs, DPOs To Partner With Community Leaders To Police Effectively

The Commissioner of Police , Lagos State Command, CP, Hakeem Odumosu, has admonished the Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers in the state to incorporate their respective community leaders into action plans for effective service delivery.

In a statement by SP Olumuyiwa Adejobi (mnipr) Police Public Relations Officer Lagos State Command Ikeja said the Commissioner of Police made the call while addressing the senior officers at the command headquarters on Friday.

He pointed out that with the ongoing #EndSARS protests and security challenges associated with ember months activities, there is need to involve community leaders and stakeholders in the security arrangement in order to police the nooks and crannies of the state.

Following the Commissioner’s of Police admonition, the Area Commanders and some Divisional Police Officers in the State have organized security summits, town hall meetings to address security needs of their areas.

For the general safety of some volatile areas on the island, the Area Commander Area A, Lion Building, ACP Bode Ojajuni, has organized a security summit, on 15th of October, 2020, held at the Holy Cross Cathedral Church Lagos.

The summit had in attendance religious leaders, leaders of Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo communities, security agencies, students and women, while issues bothering security of the entire area were critically looked into, including the management of the ongoing protests in the state.

The Area commander told the participants to catalyse provision of adequate security for all and sundry through the concept of Community Policing and robust partnership across board in the area.

 

The leaders and stakeholders appreciated the Area Commander for his initiative particularly at this challenging period and promised to be involved in effective policing of the entire area and Lagos State in general.

The Commissioner of Police has also requested for regular updates on such moves or strategies geared towards better service delivery vis-a-vis robust intelligence-led policing and public safety, from the entire fourteen area Commnads across the state
