In its tireless efforts to boost agriculture and ensure products get to the market to enhance the economic status of farmers, the Kogi State Government has commenced aggressive construction of roads to open up agrarian areas across the State.
The State Commissioner for Works and Housing, Engr Abubakar Ohere told our correspondent in Lokoja that the Ministry is responding to the marching order of the Governor to open up rural roads and make life comfortable for rural dwellers and farmers.
“The Governor procured equipment for the State Road Maintenance Agency to open up rural areas. One of the problems we face in the rural areas is the fact that the roads are largely inaccessible.
“We are changing the narrative now as we have commenced a major operation to open up rural roads. It is not about rhetoric, but action in the spirit of doing more.
“We are currently working in Mopamuro LGA and we are getting very positive responses from the people. The reason the Kogi people voted for Governor Yahaya Bello for a second term was because they believe he will continue to serve them. It doesn’t matter where, he is Governor of all.
“The Governor has a vision to make Kogi better, to take governance to all Kogites no matter where they live”.
Also, the Commissioner for Information and Communications thanked the Governor for remembering Mopamuro LGA in the ongoing agrarian roads scheme, saying the people will continue “to repose an unimpeachable confidence in the Governor”.
“We have not seen the State Government’s earth moving equipment in this area for the past 10 years. Our people are continuing to reap the benefits of their support for the Governor”, he said.
KOGROMA Officials said they are working currently on a road that links many communities in Amuro.
It would be recalled that the Kogi State Governor has declared her readiness to boost food production and return the nation to the pre-pandemic era of near food sufficiency.
The Sector is one of the key thematic areas of the Yahaya Bello Administration in the State.
It is believed that massive rural road construction is one of the various strategies of the State Government at ensuring farmers get value for their efforts which have been largely supported by the administration.
FCTA Moves To Tackle Farmers/Herders Clashes, Flagged Off Distribution Of Supplementary Feeds
As part of efforts to address persistent conflicts between farmers and herders, FCT Minister of State, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, has flagged off the sensitisation campaign and the distribution of supplementary feeds to pastoralists and farmers in the four grazing reserves of the territory.
S.A Media To FCT Minister of State, in a statement signed and issue on Tuesday, said the minister performed the ceremony in Wasa district of FCT, adding that the move by the administration was aimed at promoting integration, peaceful co-existence as well as boost livestock production in the nation’s capital.
According to the statement, the Minister noted that the present administration under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, was determined to restore the lost glory of the agricultural sector, which had hitherto been abandoned by successive administration with the discovery and adoption of oil as the mainstay of the Nigerian economy.
“It is estimated that Nigeria’s population will continue to witness exponential rise and attendant growth in the demand for food. To ensure that any uncertainties related to food security are adequately addressed, the Federal Government of Nigeria made the establishment and development of grazing reserves a key aspect of its Agricultural Promotion Programmes (APP) for the Country, with the livestock subsector playing a prominent role.”
“The establishment and development of grazing reserves is therefore aimed at providing pastoralists and crop farmers with an integrated environment under which both can operate optimally, access their needs in a harmonious environment and eliminate issues that could result in conflicts. The overall objective is to promote peaceful coexistence towards harnessingthe huge potentials that exist in the livestock subsector,” Aliyu stressed.
The minister also affirmed that in pursuant to this objective, the FCT Administration has been implementing programmes towards creating the enabling environment for the two groups as well as other willing investors to operate and make positive impacts in enhancing food security and socio-economic well-being of the residents.
She however, used the occasion to Unveil some ongoing effort by FCT Administration which is focusing on investors and development partners on the establishment of value chain ventures in the livestock subsector so as to develop needed infrastructure, create more job opportunities, enhance incomes, and improve lives and livelihoods of communities within and around the FCT’s grazing reserves.
She said plans are underway, with the support of the African Development Bank (AfDB), to establish a model Special Agro-industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) on livestock production, in the FCT, stressing that the SAPZ would grant the administration the wherewithal to bring to an end the indiscriminate grazing of animals in the Federal Capital City.
Earlier in his remarks, the FCT Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olusade Adesola, said the FCT Administration has through its relevant agencies as well as other stakeholders been doing its best to bring the parties together to embrace peace especially in grazing reserves where much of the clashes occur.
The Permanent Secretary who was represented by the Director in charge of Operations, Planning and Strategy in the office of the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Samuel Attang, noted that the dry season has been associated with increase in movement of pastiralists in search of feeds for their animals, adding that due to this movement, there might be likelihood of conflict between the two groups.
In his welcome address, the Acting Secretary of FCT Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, Mr. Ibe Prospect, stressed the importance of livestock sector in the quest to attain food security, noting that if the sector was well harnessed, it has the capacity to generate jobs and income as well as provide the nutritional value that was required for healthy human development.
He, therefore, commended the FCT Minister of State for demonstrating dynamism in addressing the issue, adding that the incidences of violent conflicts between pastoralists and crop farmers has hindered efforts of government to fully harness the potential of the sector towards achieving the desired objectives.
Farmers Protest Over Destruction Of Farmland, Crops By Herdsmen In Kogi.
Idris Ahmed, Lokoja.
Hundreds of farmers from Egbe, in Yagba west local government area of Kogi state on Monday took to the streets protesting incessant destruction of farmlands and crops worth millions of Naira by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
The protesting farmers called on the State government to intervene immediately to avoid breakdown of law and order in the area, as they can no longer watch herdsmen wantonly destroy farmland and crops they toiled for one year to produce
The spokes man of the farmers, Mr Wale Oti, who briefed newsmen on the incident, lamented that the way and manner in which the farms and crops waiting to be harvested which have been destroyed are very pathetic as damage done is unquantifiable.
Oti explained that Egbe is a boundary town between Kogi and Kwara State, with about 50,000 inhabitants, whose major source of livelihood is farming.
He stated that majority of the farmers have been enduring these incessant destruction of their farmlands for years, but situation became worst with the warm reception accorded them by the Kogi state government, as the herdsmen came in droves to settle in the area.
“Majority of the farmers who have been labouring on their farms since the onset of raining season, who are optimistic of having something to harvest, got to their farms on Sunday morning to see total grazing down of their farm .
“This brought about the peaceful protest to the traditional ruler of the town, the Elegbe of Egbe, Oba Ayo Irukera, to call the herdsmen to order, but we are making another one to further butress our bitterness and pain towards what the herdsmen are doing to us.
“As they began the peaceful protest this morning, police officers came to dislodge them, but farmers mobilize themselves peacefully and went to the palace of Elegbe.
“Arrest was made yesterday of 2 cows who were caught on a farm so farmers could not go to the police station to avoid harassment
“While the protest was going on 2 Fulani herdsmen were found with gun, they were disarmed and taken to police station,” he stated.
