Who Is Dr. Michael Oziegbe Onolememen: A Politician, Professional And Scholar

Under the stratosphere, there are few men who radiate a mix of dynamic charm and exuding charisma, and among these few men is Dr. (Arc) Mike Onolememen, CON, Ph.D.

He is a medley of a quintessence; that is quality and class, an archetype of a perfect gentleman with substance. He is mostly misunderstood by those who judge him from afar because of his gentlemanly’s nature which gives room for his reservation as a person.

People are mostly used to politicians who pontificate, who speak aloud to be heard and seen, who throw away decorum in public to be seen as powerful, who drum their own worth, and who create an aura of self-worth when the reverse is the case.

Dr. Michael O. Onolememen was born in Uromi, on September 4th, 1965. He began his early education at St. Anthony’s Primary School there in Uromi and moved on to Annunciation Catholic College, Irrua.

He was admitted into the prestigious King’s College, Lagos, for the higher school certificate (HSC) program where he had a brief spell before pursuing his university education.

He completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture and Master’s degree in Architecture in 1985 and 1988 from Bendel State University and University of Nigeria respectively. Not comfortable with these two degrees alone, he went to the University of Lagos for his Master’s degree in Construction Management in 1991.

Not contented, he enrolled for his doctoral degree program in 2008 at the Walden University, Minneapolis, MN, USA, where, in 2015 he bagged the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Public Policy and Administration. He is an alumnus of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, Massachusetts, USA, where he obtained a Proffesional Certificate (2014) in Infrastructure in a Market Economy (Public-Private Partnerships in a Changing World).

Dr. Mike Onolememen has been listed as a notable architect in Marquis Who’s Who. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (FNIA), a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management (FNIM), and a fourth-degree Knight of the Honoured Order of St. Mulumba (KSM) in the Holy Catholic Church.

Arc. Onolememen was honoured in 2015 at home, with a chieftaincy title of the ADOLOR of Uromi Kingdom by the Ojuromi of Uromi Kingdom, a title that was held by the late nationalist, Chief Anthony Enahoro, CFR.

He has also been honoured by several professional bodies in Nigeria as a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, (FNSE), Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors(F NIS), Fellow of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (FNMGS), Fellow of the Academy of Entrepreneurial Studies (FAES) and a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (FNIQS).

In 2000, Dr. Onolememen served as Executive Member of the Management Committee of the Petroleum (Special) Trust Fund (PTF), an infrastructure rehabilitation and development agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria, with executive responsibility for the Directorate of Projects Management.

In January of 2007, he was appointed Minister of State for Defence by President Olusegun Obasanjo and had responsibilities for the Nigerian Airforce, and all military training institutions and parastatals in Nigeria, as well as serving as the Deputy Chairman of Army Council, Navy Council, and Airforce Council.

He has been the principal consultant in the Nigerian architectural and engineering design firm, Gomic Consortium International Limited from 1990 till date.

From July to May 2015, Dr. Michael Onolememen served as Minister of Works and member of the Federal Executive Council in the Federal Government of Nigeria, where he had the responsibility for the design and supervision of construction and rehabilitation of national roads infrastructure. He was also at that time a member of the National Economic Management Team.

From 2012 to 2015, Dr. Onolememen served as Chairman, Project Steering Committee of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Regional Highway project ( Lagos-Abidjan-Dakar Corridor) constituted by the Presidents and Heads of Government of West African Countries.

He was a member of the Ministerial Committee for the Nigerian Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan(NIIMP) and was chair of the technical working group on transportation.

In September 2014, Dr Michael Onolememen was honoured among 305 Nigerians, with one of Nigeria’s highest National Awards, Commander of the Order of the Niger(CON), by the then President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, in appreciation of his meritorious services to the nation.

With the prestigious CON national award, Mike Onolemenmen, a professional architect and distinguished administrator, joined his compatriot awardees with the impetus to do more of such selfless sacrifices for the enhancement of Nigerians.

He has authored two books; “Infrastructure Development in Nigeria; A Political and Economic History” published in London and New York by Routledge Publishers in February 2020; and Bridging the Gap: Memoirs of Nigeria’s former Minister of Works; published in 2021 by Author House, IN, USA.

Dr. Michael Onolememen is happily married, and the marriage is blessed with children.

Dr. Michael Oziegbe Onolememen is mostly described as a ‘builder’, a motivational force, and an inspiration to many.

“The Zonal Technical Workshop Was Timely And Profitable” – Hajia Hassisat

 

The recently concluded Two Days Zonal Technical Workshop on Medium Term National Development Plan 2021/2025, have been described as a good step in the Right Direction.

The Chairman, Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO) Federal, Hajia Hassisat Ozavize Suleiman, stated this while speaking with Newsmen at the end of the event which was organized by the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning at the Glass House, Lokoja.

She said the Confluence State was blessed to have been picked for the all important Workshop, stressing that a lot have been achieved already through various delibrations in the course of the event.

Hajia Ozavize Suleiman, who is also the Executive Chairman, Kogi State Mineral Resources Development Agency, noted that there was need for adequate attention to be accorded to the Solid Minerals and Agricultural sector, following the need for diversification of the Country’s economy, while calling on the Federal Government to allow States exercise a level of control over the Solid Minerals sector.

She also commended Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello, for his doggedness and unwavering commitment at giving the solid Minerals and natural Resources sector in the State a facelift, and promised to continue to live up to expectations in the two offices she occupies.

A Kano based scholar, Dr. Abdallah Gadon Kaya have raised concern over highbrow residential areas occupied exclusively by Igbos in Kano State noting that such allowance creates a vacuum for disunity.

In a video obtained by Arewa Agenda, the scholar who noted that the community located in Zungeru Road, behind Kano Airport said, “they have their massive gates, security and other facilities that prevent other people, especially indigenes from accessing. Government should not allow such to be happening when we can’t go to Onitsha, Aba or Enugu an create an exclusive place for Northerners or Muslims like that.”

Dr. Abdallah, known for his clear stance on topical issues, called on the state Government to promote policies that will harmonize the Hausas and Igbos in the area and bring about peaceful coexistence.

“We should not have such exclusive places, government should ensure there are mosques there and Kano indigenes should be given access to build houses too in such highbrow area,” Gadon Kaya insisted.

Arewa Agenda learnt that many people are heeding the call.

Speaking on the matter, a Political Commentator and Secretary Arewa Youths Council (AYC), Bello Shehu States that, “It dangerous, especially when some ethnic groups are clamouring for separation from the rest of the country to now allow one tribe to exclusively occupy an highbrow. Even though Arewa people are denied such privileges of owning business premises and estates in Igboland, we need to mix up to promote national unity, tolerance and brotherhood. That way, we can appreciate each other more and live peacefully together.”

Igala in Kogi State disown Biafra – ICDA tackles IPOB over secession bid.

Chairman of the Incorporated trustees of Igala Cultural Development Association (ICDA) working committee, Comrade Enemona Emmanuel Omattah has disowned the secessionist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), asking it to exclude Igala land from its territorial map.

Addressing newsmen in Lokoja on Monday, Omattah said it was an error to include Igala nation in the map of Biafra, which has neither cultural, social nor administrative affinity.

Mr Omattah who was the former Kogi State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), stated that the age-long trade relations and intermarriage between Igbos and Igalas should not be enough reason to draft them in to the agitation for Biafra entity.

“We are not part of their agitation. IPOB and Biafra cannot annex Igala nation. We are calling on Igbo people to stop including Igala nation lin their map.

“During the unfortunate Nigerian civil war led by the late Ikemba of Nnewi Chief Colonel Odumegwu Ojukwu (Rtd) Igala land was attacked and severally bombed. The people that attacked us years ago cannot come around now and claim we are part of them.

“We are not part of Biafra. We will never be part of Biafra. Though we do business with them and even intermarry, that does not mean we are part of them.

“We believe in the Nigeria project. We believe in the leadership of Nigeria nation. We have our issues with the Nigeria nation but we are not antagonistic. We will address our issues at the appropriate time, not by carrying guns and fighting. We believe in the corporate existence of Nigeria.This is the position of Igala nation,” he said.

Speaking on the alleged leadership crisis in ICDA, Omattah said the socio cultural group is being repositioned to fulfil its mandate.

“The incorporated trustees of ICDA has constituted a working committee and made me the leader of the group. The working committee was mandated to reposition ICDA, interface, consult and dialogue with other stakeholders of Igala nation, and review the constitution and work modalities for election.

“We are working to get the 21 old Igala native districts involved in Igala business. as an umbrella covering all 21 Igala native districts,who are now occupying the nine local government areas of the state,” he maintained.”
