Ortom: A Beacon of leadership and Stability — By Samson Ochono

Chief Samuel Ortom

In the tumultuous landscape of Nigerian politics, where infighting and factionalism often threaten party unity, Chief Samuel Ortom stands out as a figure of resilience and maturity. As the immediate past Governor of Benue State and a prominent leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ortom embodies the qualities necessary to steer the party through internal crises and prepare it for future electoral challenges.

Calm in the Storm

The internal crisis within the Benue State chapter of the PDP, fueled by tensions between supporters of Senator Gabriel Suswam and those of Ortom himself, illustrates the challenges faced by political leaders. While many resort to vitriolic exchanges, Chief Ortom’s composed demeanour has been nothing short of admirable. Instead of retaliating with hostility, he has chosen a path of restraint, demonstrating that true leadership is defined not by how one reacts to provocation but by the ability to maintain focus on the bigger picture.

Ortom’s calmness has diffused potentially explosive situations within the Benue State chapter of PDP and set a tone of foreseeable unity within the party. His ability to remain level-headed amidst glaring insults on social and conventional media has resonated with the majority of PDP members in the state. The Ortom example and approach is crucial when divisions can easily escalate into irreparable rifts.

Another leader would have got angry and incensed by the torrent of insults thrown at him by supporters of Senator Suswam and perhaps responded in equal measure; but not Ortom. He took every piece of invective thrown at him calmly and continued to steer the party on the path of cohesion.

Advocating for Unity

Recognizing the importance of unity, Chief Ortom in a recent press statement called for reconciliation among party factions. His appeal to both his supporters and those of Senator Suswam to “sheathe their swords” reflected a deep understanding of the dynamics at play within the PDP. His timely call showed that he is a man for peace and is not given to mere platitudes. Ortom’s call for an end to the internal wrangling in PDP was a strategic move aimed at rebuilding trust and solidarity among party members, while also fortifying the PDP’s position in Benue political landscape.

The ability to unify a party in the face of adversity, particularly when you the target of attacks is a rare quality, and Ortom’s commitment to this cause exemplifies his leadership acumen. By advocating for collaboration over conflict, he has laid the groundwork for a more cohesive party that can present a united front in upcoming elections.

Building Confidence Among Stakeholders

The vote of confidence passed on Chief Ortom by PDP stakeholders during a press conference in Makurdi yesterday is a clear endorsement of his leadership qualities. This show of solidarity from influential party members reinforces Ortom’s position and inspires confidence among the wider PDP community. It also indicates that despite the internal turmoil, there is a strong belief in Ortom’s vision for the party and its future.

Such backing is equally vital as the PDP seeks to reposition itself for future elections. A united and confident leadership can galvanize grassroots support, attract new members, and enhance the party’s electoral prospects. Ortom’s ability to garner this support amidst challenges demonstrates his effectiveness as a leader and his commitment to the party’s long-term success.

The recently held Ward and Local Government Congresses of PDP in Benue State as endorsed by the party stakeholders is another example of Chief Ortom’s ability to lead the party to successfully conduct its internal elections.

Leading by Example

Chief Ortom’s leadership style is characterized by empathy and inclusivity. His restraint in the face of attacks serves as a powerful example for his supporters, teaching them the value of dignity and respect in political discourse. By modeling these behaviours, Ortom is not only strengthening his own leadership but also nurturing a new generation of politically engaged citizens who prioritize dialogue over discord.

Ortom’s leadership qualities extend beyond crisis management to encompass vision and strategic planning. His focus on rebuilding the PDP in Benue State underscores his aim to create a party that is not only competitive but also responsive to the needs of the people.
