Just In: IGP panics, hastily arraigns arrested Edo PDP members in Abuja

Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun

By Jane Uyi Orobosa

After Edo people protested the indiscriminate arrest and detention of the People’s Democratic party, PDP, members before the September 21 governorship election, Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun directed their arraignment on fabricated charges in an Abuja Magistrate Court.

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has stated unequivocally that he and the people of Edo do not support the biased position of the Nigerian Police Force and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in intimidating and harassing PDP members, and may not sign the Peace Accord unless those detained for over two months in Abuja and the Local Government Chairman recently arrested are released or charged to court in Benin City.

As at the time of filling this report, it could not be ascertained the very location of the Court or the specific charges for which they were being held.

The police’s blatant partisanship in harassing PDP members has heightened tensions, validating APC chieftains’ boasts about utilizing federal might to win the election, which is mere nine days away.
