Maputo authorities are demanding 30 million meticais, equivalent to around 480,000 euros, in damages for destruction caused during recent protests.

Reports indicate that Mondlane has been organizing demonstrations since mid-October, denouncing what he alleges is pervasive fraud in the recent presidential election.

Besides the civil lawsuit, Mondlane is involved in a criminal case with Vitano Singano, the Democratic Revolution Party (DRP) leader, who is accused of plotting to attack the presidency, coinciding with Mondlane’s major protest on November 7.

The protests have resulted in considerable loss of life, with reported fatalities standing at a minimum of 30 according to the United Nations and exceeding 60 as per civil society groups.

Authorities have cited the protests as the cause of extensive damage, while Mondlane reaffirms his commitment to ongoing mobilization against the government, complicating efforts to establish a productive dialogue.
