Chief Ortom Urges Calm, Support for Gov Alia Amid Benue Security, Governance Concerns
Chief Samuel Ortom, the immediate past Governor of Benue State, has been made aware of the numerous reactions and debates in both conventional and social media following the launch of the State Civil Protection Guards (BSCPG), also known as “Nyam Nyor”, by the present Governor Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia. Several reactions have indicated that the current administration merely renamed the Community Volunteer Guards, a legacy of its administration.
This was contained in a statement issued by his Media Aide, Terver Akase, dated December 16, 2024, which indicated that Chief Ortom understands and deeply appreciates all those who have engaged in passionate discussions regarding the issue, but wishes to appeal to them to sheathe their swords and give peace a chance.
According to the former Governor, it is natural to have differing opinions on governance and the state’s direction. However, he appeals to those with strong views to remember that government is dynamic and evolving, not static. He emphasizes that the State Executive Council, in conjunction with the House of Assembly, has the constitutional authority to create and amend laws to address development issues at any time.
Chief Ortom appeals to the people of the state to support Governor Alia in his leadership roles and pray for the success of the current administration, as it will ultimately be beneficial to everyone, including himself.
He asserts that throughout his two terms as Governor, he dedicated himself to serving the people of Benue State to the best of his ability, motivated by a deep commitment to the collective welfare and the protection of the land.
“I have no regrets about my commitment and the sacrifices I made to defend Benue people against oppression and external interests that sought to undermine our rights and heritage as a people. My actions were always motivated by a desire to uplift our people, secure our God-given land and ensure a bright future for generations to come. The establishment of the Community Volunteer Guards, Livestock Guards and the enactment of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law were results of our pact with the people to always be on their side, as God Almighty was directing me”.
Chief Ortom says it is however important to acknowledge that the circumstances and economic realities during his administration differ from those of Governor Alia’s time. He stresses that each leader faces unique challenges, and it is vital that the people respect this fact and engage in constructive dialogue at all times. The former Governor’s hope is for a collaborative spirit, where the state can build on the progress made and continue to foster development for the people.
“I encourage all Benue people to refrain from hostility and divisive commentaries in the media. Instead, let us rally round our Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, offering support and constructive criticism. It is imperative that we stand together as one people, united by our shared aspirations for growth and development”.
Chief Ortom equally enjoins the people to desist from casting aspersions on traditional rulers in the state and emphasizes that the Royal Fathers deserve respect as custodians of the cultural heritage of the state.
He wishes Governor Alia the best and prays that God grants him wisdom as he tackles the development challenges facing the state.
The former Governor in the same vein, prays for Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume and urges the people of the state to support him to succeed in his assignment in the administration of President Bola Tinubu and the entire nation.
