By Roseline Okafor, Nasarawa.
Professor Levi Terzungwe Mayange of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, has recommended the creation of rehabilitation centers in Nigeria to support troubled marriages.
Mayange made the call at the university’s 49th inaugural lecture series, which took place in the Assembly Hall on Wednesday.
Mayange’s lecture, titled “Rehabilitation of Post-Marital Imbalances of Married Couples in Nigeria: A Mental Health Counseling Approach,” pinpointed various factors contributing to post-marital imbalance, including dissatisfaction, conflicts, separation, and divorce.

“In extreme cases, post-marital imbalances may lead to symptoms resembling post traumatic stress disorder, particularly in relationships involving domestic violence, emotional abuse, or other forms of trauma”.
He emphasized the importance of mental health counseling in addressing these imbalances, providing couples with tools and strategies to build healthier relationships.
To address marital conflicts, Mayange advised couples to prioritize sexual satisfaction, which he believes can bring peace to their homes.
The professor also highlighted the effectiveness of rehabilitation counseling in transforming the physical and moral self-concept of prison inmates. He noted that counseling can lead to reformation upon completion of their jail term.
Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, Vice Chancellor, represented by Professor Abdullahi Sallau Modibbo, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), portrayed the inaugural lecture as an academic ritual that encourages excellence and research.
“We are proud of the Prof. Levi Mayange, for his commitment towards sustaining the department of guidance and counseling of the University. The vice Chancellor is committed to restructure the department for optimal productivity, we urged you the professors to support us to succeed”.
