The Federal Government has launched an initiative to provide free caesarean sections for poor and vulnerable women across Nigeria.
Dr. Yahaya Baba Adamu, Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Keffi, praised the initiative, saying it would reduce the plight of women who die in labor due to financial constraints.
The initiative, tagged “Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII),” aims to ensure that vulnerable women receive necessary healthcare services.
It was launched during the Joint Annual Health Review (JAR) organized by the Ministry of Health in 2024.
Dr. Adamu confirmed that the initiative has already commenced at FMC Keffi, with several pregnant women benefiting from the program. He also commended the Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for its efforts in improving the health sector.
To participate in the initiative, federal hospitals must sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). Currently, FMC Keffi and the Federal University Teaching Hospital Lafia are the only participating hospitals in Nasarawa State.
“But I also know that some state governments signed and indicated certain number of General Hospitals they want to be part of the initiative and they were also captured”.
Dr. Adamu hopes that more hospitals in the state will join the initiative soon, also appealed to the media to help raise awareness about the program, emphasizing that every vulnerable Nigerian woman is eligible to benefit, regardless of whether they are registered with the NHIA.
He stated that the Federal Medical Centre Keffi is committed to implementing the federal government’s efforts by providing the necessary tools to ensure the smooth takeoff of the project, and called on media organizations to sensitize and educate the public on the importance of the program.
