South Africa Deports Nigerian Televangelist Timothy Omotoso

Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso was deported from South Africa on May 18, 2025, after voluntarily agreeing to leave the country following his re-arrest on immigration charges.

He had been acquitted in April 2025 of 32 charges including rape, sexual exploitation, and human trafficking, after spending eight years in jail.

Omotoso was escorted from Durban to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport and flew back to Nigeria.

The South African Department of Home Affairs banned him from returning for five years.

Prosecutors have stated they will appeal the acquittal and investigate the handling of the case.
