Former speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji
Tinubu Invited Us to His House, We Declined His Wife’s Food – Ikuforiji
The former speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, has stated that Nigerians should focus on holding state governors and local government chairmen accountable for governance instead of only concentrating on the federal government.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
According to The Sun, Ikuforiji shared this view in his office in Lagos this week. He pointed out that state and local governments together receive over 50% of the money allocated by the federal government, yet people still pay more attention to the central government. He believes that citizens are able to reach local council chairmen more easily than they can reach the president, which makes it easier for them to hold local leaders accountable.
While speaking on the issue of a state of emergency in Rivers State, he explained that when there is a looming disaster in any state, the President has the power to declare a state of emergency but does not have the right to remove any governor.
He stated that the President could only suspend a governor and even that had a limit, noting that the maximum duration allowed was six months, with a possible renewal subject to the approval of the National Assembly. According to him, the constitution had made it almost impossible for the President to control a governor.
He added that it was the State House of Assembly that should hold the governor accountable. He pointed out that some might wonder why the President could not influence the State House of Assembly to act, but said that as a father of the nation, there was a limit to how far the President could engage in such politics before it became what could be described as “dirty politics.”
Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria
He further noted that it was everyone’s responsibility to ensure that State Houses of Assembly across the country became active and performed their constitutional roles, recalling that when he was Speaker, he had always seen himself as the Chief Police Officer of the state.
Further talking, he said, “People won’t even know that when Tinubu was governor, and the House was not happy with him, he called for a truce.
“He invited us to his house, and his wife prepared food for us, and you know what ?
