Nigeria’s Tinubu will meet Trump to discuss alleged terror against Christians – Presidential Adviser, Bwala says

Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump in the coming days, possibly at the White House, to discuss allegations of targeted terrorism against Christians in Nigeria. The meeting aims to address shared interests in fighting terrorism and clarify whether the terrorist attacks target only Christians or people of all faiths, with hopes to resolve any differences on this issue between the two leaders.

This engagement comes amid Trump’s accusations of Christian persecution in Nigeria and his previous support to Nigeria’s security efforts, including authorizing arms sales to aid Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.

According to Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Media, Daniel Bwala explained that the meeting purpose will focus on counterterrorism cooperation, with both leaders sharing a common goal of combating insurgency and violent extremism affecting humanity.

“There are differing views regarding whether terrorist violence in Nigeria targets exclusively Christians or all faith communities; this will be a key topic during the discussions.”

He also said the dialogue is expected to address and reconcile these differences to help guide future US-Nigeria relations on security and aid.

The Nigerian Presidency stresses the importance of diplomacy and protocol in the timing and location of the meeting, which could take place at either the State House in Abuja or the White House in Washington, DC.

“This meeting represents an important diplomatic effort to address complex security and religious freedom concerns involving Nigeria and the United States.”

It would be recalled that US President, Donald Trump has labeled Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” regarding religious freedom issues and has threatened military action and suspension of aid if the situation does not improve.

Reacting to Trump’s claim, Nigeria’s government, led by President Tinubu, has expressed confidence in overcoming these challenges and emphasized results achieved in counterterrorism with US support.
