Ortom describes Dan Agbese as an icon of journalism

The immediate past Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, expresses deep sorrow over the passing of renowned journalist, author, and celebrated media administrator, Dan Agbese, who died a few days ago at the age of 81.

A statement issued by Terver Akase, Media Adviser/Consultant to H.E. Samuel Ortom, November 20, 2025, Chief Ortom describes Agbese’s death as a monumental loss to Benue State, Nigeria’s media community, and the entire nation, and notes that the deceased was a doyen of journalism, whose brilliance, courage, and commitment to truth-telling helped shape responsible reporting and public discourse for more than five decades.

The former Governor recalls that Agbese, who held the revered traditional title of Awan’Otun of Agila in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State, served his profession and the country with exceptional distinction as co-founder of the now rested Newswatch Magazine, former editor of The Nigeria Standard and The New Nigerian, as well as former General Manager of Radio Benue.

According to Chief Ortom, “Dan Agbese was not just a journalist; he was a national treasure. His mastery of language, his sharp intellect, and his fearless commentary made him one of the most respected voices in Nigeria’s media space. He set unmatched standards of professionalism and integrity that many journalists today still aspire to. His pen was his weapon for the truth, and he wielded it with honour”.

The former Governor extends heartfelt condolences to the Agbese family, the media fraternity, and all Nigerians who respected and admired the departed statesman of journalism and prays that God grants his soul eternal rest.
