Nasarawa Assembly Suspends Lafia LG Chairman

 

Nasarawa State House of Assembly, has suspended the Chairman of Lafia Local Government, Hon. Mohammad Haliru Arabo for three months over his involvement in the impeachment of the Council’s Speaker.

 

Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau PhD the Speaker of the House announced this after Hon. Musa Ibrahim Abubakar, the Chairman, House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs moved a motion under matters of public importance to that effect during the House proceedings in Lafia today.

 

Speaker Jatau said that the suspension of the Chairman of Lafia Local Government will pave way for neutral investigation into the matter, bring peace and harmony to the Local Government and the State at large.

 

Dr. Jatau directed the Deputy Chairman of Lafia Local Government, Hon. Uba Arikiya to take over the affairs of the Local Government pending the conclusion of investigation on the matter.

 

“I want to appreciate the mover of this motion and all those that contributed on this matter.

 

“This issue is affecting the peace and stability of the seat of power, Lafia Local Government Area.

 

“In view of this, the Chairman of Lafia Local Government is hereby suspended for three months pending investigation by the House Standing Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs into the matter.

 

“Also, the status of the Lafia Local Government Legislative Arm remain until conclusion of investigation by the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs” he said.

 

The Speaker while quoting various sections of the constitution that empowers the House to take such actions queried the actions of the Chairman for intruding into legislative matters that did not concern him.

He then directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the House resolution to Gov. Abdullahi Sule as the chief security officer of the State.

 

Earlier, Hon. Musa Ibrahim Abubakar, the Chairman, House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, has moved a motion for the suspension of the Chairman of Lafia Local Government over his involvement in the impeachment of the Speaker of the Lafia Local Government Legislative Arm.

 

“Mr Speaker, yesterday, we read on media and social media on the suspension of the Speaker, Lafia Local Government for six months by members of the legislative council.

 

” And the suspension of the Speaker of the local government was announced by the Chairman of Lafia Local Government which this issue, if not properly handled will escalate crisis in the local government.

 

” It is in view of this that I want to call on you to support my motion for the suspension of the Chairman of Lafia Local Government for peace and stability of the local government and the state at large” he added.

 

Also contributing, Dr Hajarat Danyaro Ibrahim, Hon. Mohammed Garba Isimbabi, Hon. Suleiman Yakubu Azara and Hon. Larry Ven-Bawa, all supported for the suspension of the Chairman of Lafia Local Government.

 

They said that his suspension would avert further crisis that would arise as a result of his involvement in the suspension of the Speaker of Lafia Local Government Legislative Council.

 

And will also send a message of warning across other LGAs in the State.

 

In a related development, A Bill for a Law to Provide for the Repeal and Re-enact the Nasarawa State Harmonization and Administration of all Revenue in Nasarawa State and other Purposes Connected Therewith Scale first reading.

 

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Dr. Danladi Jatau, announced this during the House proceedings today in Lafia.

 

The Speaker slated 16th December, 2025 for the second reading of the bill.

 

Earlier, Hon. Suleiman Yakubu Azara, the Majority Leader of the House moved a motion for the bill to scale first reading.

 

Hon. Luka Iliya Zhekaba, the Minority Leader of the House seconded the motion.

 

The House unanimously passed the bill into first reading.
