Nasarawa opposition party condemns youth ‘treks’ to APC leaders

African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Nasarawa State has criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government, accusing it of failing young people and reducing them to “political trekkers”.

In a statement on Friday, by ADC State Publicity Secretary, Comr Idris Ojoko, highlighted several instances where supporters, including youths and political figures, undertook long-distance walks to show loyalty to APC aspirants ahead of next year’s elections.

Among them were groups who trekked from Keana to Keffi to meet Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada; from Keffi to Lafia for former Inspector General of Police Muhammad Adamu Abubakar; and from Sabon Gida in Kokona local government area to Lafia for Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Danladi Jatau.

Others walked from Keffi to Lafia for State Accountant General Dr Ahmed Musa Muhammad, and from Udege in Nasarawa LGA to Toto for Dr. Musa Muhammed Maikaya.

The ADC statement also cited former lawmaker Hon Salihu Musa Iyimoga, who reportedly trekked from Doma to Gudi to support Governor Abdullahi Sule.

It described as “heartbreaking” the case of a young couple who walked from Obi to Lafia with their infant in support of Dr Ahmed Musa Muhammad.

ADC State Publicity Secretary Comr Idris Ojoko said the treks reflected “poverty, unemployment, hopelessness and the complete absence of people-centred policies” under the APC.

“No clear developmental demands were made, and the aspirants offered no concrete agenda,” Mr Ojoko said. He added that many participants received only “motorcycles, cash handouts… or nothing more than tea and bread”.

The party described the trend as “exploitation” that bred “dependency, dehumanisation and political desperation”, warning of risks to the state’s social and economic future.

Mr Ojoko said Nasarawa youths deserved “dignity, opportunities, skills and jobs”, positioning the ADC as an alternative focused on “good governance and sustainable youth empowerment” ahead of the 2027 polls.

Global Times Nigeria reports that the APC has not yet responded to the claims.

Nasarawa State deserves better. Our youths deserve better. Ojoko added.
