…..As families in Chiranci mourn, the question lingers: How did killers strike so boldly in daylight, and why did a community stay silent?

In a gruesome attack that has sent shockwaves through Kano State, seven members of the same family, a mother and her six young children, were hacked to death in broad daylight inside their home in the densely packed Chiranci community of Gidan Kwari.
The victims, identified as Fatima Abubakar and her children, Maimuna Haruna (17, student), Aisha Haruna (16, student), Bashir Haruna (13, student), Abubakar Haruna (10, student), Faruk Haruna (7, student), and toddler Abdussalam Haruna (1 year, 6 months), were killed in the afternoon amid a crowded neighbourhood where homes stand wall-to-wall, with residents going about their daily routines.
Eyewitness accounts paint a picture of chilling impunity. The children, all students at a public school, had earlier sought permission from their teacher to return home for lunch, promising to come back for classes.

The assailants stormed the family home during peak daytime hours, butchering the victims without any apparent resistance.
Neighbours reported hearing agonising screams, with Fatima reportedly crying out the name of someone known to her in a desperate plea for help. Yet, in this bustling area, no one intervened.
Instead, many residents barricaded themselves indoors, leaving the family to their fate. “We heard the cries, but fear gripped everyone,” one neighbour, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told reporters. “By the time we gathered courage, it was too late.”
This deafening silence has led to condemnation, with critics arguing that collective action, shouting alarms, banging doors, or raising a communal cry, could have deterred the killers.
“Strength is in numbers. When fear paralyses a community, criminals operate freely,” said community leader Malam Salih, who first broke the story.
Security analysts warn this brazen killing signals a dangerous escalation. “What we’ve seen in remote villages is now invading city centres like Gidan Kwari,” Salih noted.
“Kano’s crowded neighbourhoods can no longer pretend to be safe havens.”Police have launched a manhunt, but no arrests have been made as of press time.
The bodies were evacuated to a nearby morgue, where autopsy results are awaited.
Global Times Nigeria further investigation reveled Rights groups and residents are demanding immediate action from the Kano State Government.
“This is not just a crime; it’s an assault on our collective humanity. Full justice must be served, and security beefed up to restore confidence,” Salih urged.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration has yet to issue an official statement, but sources say high-level meetings are underway.
