BENUE @ 50: Ortom urges reflection, unity for progress
Immediate past Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, has described the 50th anniversary of the state’s creation as a pivotal moment for sober reflection on its journey and a renewed pledge to its future.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by Terver Akase, Media Adviser/Consultant to H.E. Chief Samuel Ortom, said Chief Ortom, who spoke on the golden jubilee marking Benue’s birth in 1976, said the state has grown through the resilience of its people, its rich cultural heritage, and its role as the nation’s Food Basket, especially in agriculture.
He noted that the past five decades brought progress alongside tough challenges, but Benue’s sons and daughters have shown unwavering perseverance, discipline, and love for their land.
“The journey of these 50 years has not been without trials. Our people have endured periods of insecurity, pain and loss, yet they have consistently demonstrated uncommon courage and determination to defend their ancestral heritage and uphold the sanctity of human life,” Chief Ortom said.
Benue Assembly’s New Widows law sparks confusion: is Ortom’s 2023 legislation now dead?
“The story of Benue is therefore not only one of struggle, but of hope, resistance against injustice, and an unyielding quest for peace and progress.” Reflecting on his tenure as governor from 2015 to 2023, Chief Ortom said the role strengthened his faith in God-led leadership, protection of lives, rule of law, fairness, and equity.”
As Governor of Benue State from 2015 to 2023, I had the honour of serving a people whose love for their land and commitment to justice inspired every decision we took in defence of our collective future. I remain immensely grateful to the people of Benue for the trust they reposed in me and for standing firm in the face of adversity,” he added.

The former governor called on all stakeholders, government, traditional rulers, private sector, civil society, and Benue people everywhere, to unite for responsible leadership and inclusive growth.
He urged citizens to pray for leaders to succeed and congratulated Benue indigenes at home and in the Diaspora on the milestone, charging them to stay resolute in pursuing peace, security, and prosperity.
