NSUK Journalism Students Blazing Trail as Inaugural Executives Take Oath of Office

In a landmark moment for student leadership at Nasarawa State University Keffi (NSUK), the Department of Journalism and Media Studies has sworn in its pioneering set of student executives, heralding a new era of organized representation and initiative among undergraduates.

The colourful swearing-in ceremony unfolded on Monday at the New Faculty Extension, Theatre 1 classroom, where the freshly elected officials solemnly took their oaths of office before an assembly of students, lecturers, and departmental stakeholders, underscoring the department’s commitment to fostering self-governance and excellence right from its nascent stages.

Administering the oath with characteristic gravitas was the Acting Head of Department, Dr. Santas Tsegyu, who seized the occasion to illuminate the profound significance of this development for the young department.

He recounted how the 14-member executive body emerged victorious from a meticulously conducted election the previous week, noting that today’s proceedings were indispensable for them to officially commence their duties.

“This is the first set of executives that the Department of Journalism and Media Studies Association is having for the faculty. Last week, an election was conducted and a 14-man executive emerged. What we are doing today is the swearing-in ceremony because the executives cannot begin work without being sworn in,” Dr. Tsegyu declared.

He further emphasized that establishing this student body was long overdue, especially for a budding department within the faculty, as it sets a sterling pace for leadership among both 100 and 200-level students.

“It is very important because as a new department in the faculty, we need to set a pace for leadership initiative.

This involves both 100 and 200 level students. It is overdue that we have a student body, and I am glad that history has been made today,” he added, revealing that the department had already disbursed a take-off grant to empower the executives in kickstarting their mandate, including printing banners, registering the association with the Students’ Affairs Division, and issuing receipts for dues collection.

Echoing the HOD’s sentiments, Dr. Zuwaira Tata, a lecturer in the department, stressed the pivotal role of coordination in sustaining departmental vibrancy and smooth operations. “Everything we venture into requires coordination, and that is the essence of this election.

The newly elected executives should carry everyone along in running the activities of the department for the smooth flow of work,” she advised, urging inclusivity to ensure collective progress.Radiating enthusiasm, the newly sworn-in President of the association, Maxwell Guma, vowed to elevate the department’s profile through innovative strategies, including the creation of vibrant social media platforms.

“I am delighted about this position and ready to work to take the department to greater heights. One of our plans is to develop social media handles for the department such as TikTok and others to create awareness and encourage more learning and development among students,” Guma affirmed.

His Vice President, Ameh Christabel, reinforced this commitment, promising seamless collaboration and unwavering dedication among the executives to deliver on their promises and drive student affairs forward.

This inauguration not only formalizes leadership structures but also signals robust prospects for growth and coordination within the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at NSUK, with the new executives poised to champion student welfare, departmental development, and enhanced visibility in the academic community.
