Nigerians want free services but shun tax payment – Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has decried the persistent challenge of tax collection in Nigeria, lamenting what he described as a disconnect between citizens’ expectations and their willingness to contribute to government revenue.

He noted that while many Nigerians demand improved infrastructure and basic amenities, there is a general reluctance to fulfill civic obligations through tax payment.

Speaking during a live interview on TVC News, the minister stressed that generating revenue through taxation remains a difficult task, as many citizens are unwilling to comply.

According to him, the expectation for government to provide roads, electricity, and other essential services without corresponding financial contributions continues to strain public resources.

He remarked that taxation is not an easy process, especially in a system where citizens are resistant to paying taxes despite demanding better living conditions.

Wike further explained the financial realities confronting the FCT administration, revealing that allocations from the Federal Government are grossly insufficient to meet the demands of the territory.

He disclosed that the FCT receives only about one percent of the Federal Government’s allocation, explaining that such revenue cannot sustain the growing needs of the capital city.

He added that with monthly salary obligations running into billions of naira, the administration is left with no choice but to explore alternative means of augmenting revenue, particularly through internally generated funds.

Addressing criticisms from the public, the minister acknowledged facing intense backlash in the course of his duties, stating that he remains one of the most criticized public officials in the country. Despite this, he maintained that his focus remains on delivering results rather than being distracted by negative comments, emphasizing his commitment to the responsibilities entrusted to him.

On issues of transparency and accountability, Wike assured that he maintains close oversight of the territory’s finances.

He noted that revenue generated from taxes places a responsibility on his office to demonstrate prudent management and tangible results, adding that he is always prepared to account for the use of public funds under his administration.
