Showing Power Through Violence Is Foolishness — Seun Kuti Warns Nigerians
Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, has stirred widespread reactions after criticising what he described as a toxic culture among some African men who equate violence with strength and authority.
In a recent video circulating online, the outspoken musician condemned the tendency to resort to force or intimidation when offended, arguing that such actions do not demonstrate power but rather expose a lack of wisdom.
According to him, many individuals feel compelled to prove superiority by mobilising others or even involving security operatives to retaliate against perceived insults.
Kuti stressed that this approach neither resolves conflicts nor commands genuine respect. Instead, he noted, it deepens divisions and undermines social harmony. He maintained that true strength lies in self-control and emotional intelligence, not in the ability to inflict harm.
The singer further warned that perpetuating such mindsets damages relationships and contributes to a cycle of violence within society.
He urged Nigerians and Africans at large to rethink their understanding of power and embrace more constructive ways of handling disagreements.
His comments have since generated debate on social media, with many users echoing his concerns about the normalization of aggression, while others weighed in on the broader cultural expectations placed on men.
