Nasarawa State House of Assembly, NSHA, is pushing for a law to create roads and maintenance properties, which is a great initiative to improve the state’s infrastructure.
Our correspondent Yahaya Idris report that the proposed law aims to shift the responsibility for the maintenance, rehabilitation, and construction of roads to a new entity and This is a significant move, as it could lead to better road conditions and improved safety for road users in the State.
In Nigeria, the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) is already responsible for maintaining federal roads. However, the new law if established will provide more clarity on the roles and responsibilities of different entities involved in road maintenance and construction. Additionally, it could lead to increased investment in road infrastructure, which is crucial for economic growth and development.
Overall, the proposed law has the potential to make a positive impact on the state’s road network and transportation system.
This and more, the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, has passed into first reading A Bill for a Law to Establish Nasarawa State Roads and Public Properties/ Facilities Maintenance Agency (NARPPMA) for Sustainable Development and other Matters Connected Thereto.
Similarly, the House has passed into first reading A Bill for a Law to Repeal Nasarawa Agricultural Development Programme Edit No 18 of 1997 and Establish Nasarawa State Agricultural Programme and other Matters Connected Thereto 2024.
Furthermore, the House has passed into second reading A Bill for a Law to Establish Nasarawa State Inland Waterways Regulation Agency to regulate the carriage of persons and goods across all waters and rivers within Nasarawa State and other matters connected thereto.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau announced this during the House proceedings in Lafia today.
The Speaker, who commended the sponsors of the bills and fixed 18th of September, 2024 for second reading of the bill on Road and Public Properties Maintenance Agency sponsored by Hon. Jacob Ajegana kudu of Nassarawa Eggon East Constituency.
Similarly, the Speaker fixed 25th of September 2024 for second reading on the bill to repeal Nasarawa Agricultural Development Programme Edit No 18 of 1997 sponsored by Hon. Luka Iliya Zhekaba, member representing Obi Two constituency.
Earlier, the sponsored of the bill on establishment of Nasarawa State Inland Waterways Regulation Agency, Hon. Larry Ven-Bawa gave an insight into the substance of the bill which he said was aimed at among other things to create employment, safe water transportation, generation of revenue among others calling on support from his colleagues to enable the bill see the light of the day.
The bill gained the support of Hon. Members to include Rt. Hon. Abel Yakubu Bala, Hon. Hajarat Danyaro Ibrahim, Hon. Barr. Esson Mairiga and Hon. Hudu A. Hudu and it scaled second reading.
The Speaker committed the bill to the House committee on Water Resources in conjunction with committee on Works and Transport to work on the bill and report back to the House on 2nd October, 2024.
Earlier, Hon Sulaiman Yakubu Azara, the Majority Leader of the House moved motions for the bills to scale first and second readings respectively.
Hon Luka Iliya Zhekaba, the Minority Leader of the House seconded the motions.
The House unanimously passed the bills into first and second readings respectively.
