US woman, Aimee Betro convicted of conspiracy to murder in UK shooting attempt

Aimee Betro, a 45-year-old woman from West Allis, Wisconsin, has been found guilty of conspiracy to murder following a failed assassination attempt in Birmingham, United Kingdom (UK).

Betro was hired as a killer and flew to the UK as part of a plot against a Birmingham family involved in a feud.

She tried to shoot Sikander Ali, the son of a Birmingham businessman involved in the feud, at point-blank range outside his home in September 2019.

Betro was disguised with a niqab during the attempt, but her gun jammed, allowing the intended victim to escape unharmed.

Betro was involved in the conspiracy with two men, Mohammed Nazir and Mohammed Aslam, who had a vendetta against the family.

The plot stemmed from a violent altercation at a clothing boutique in 2018 that led to the feud.

The jury at Birmingham Crown Court took almost 21 hours to convict Betro of conspiracy to murder, possession of a self-loading pistol with intent to cause fear of violence, and illegally importing ammunition.

She showed no reaction to the guilty verdicts and is due to be sentenced on August 21, 2025.

Betro had been living in Armenia before being extradited to the UK for the trial.

The case involved extensive cross-border cooperation among law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and UK’s National Crime Agency.

Despite having virtually no criminal history prior to the assassination plot, Betro was described by police as “extremely dangerous and highly motivated to inflict severe harm” and part of a carefully planned, persistent murder conspiracy.
