NSUK Strikes Global Deal with RUDN to Train Media Students on AI Ethics, Entrepreneurial Reporting

Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), in collaboration with the University of Russia (RUDN University), has organized a professional short-course scholarship workshop on Entrepreneurial Journalism in Algorithmic Systems and the Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence in Academic Research and Writing.
The two-day workshop, held at the Window on America, NSUK University Library, brought together students and academics to explore responsible AI usage, digital research tools, and emerging trends in journalism.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of NSUK, Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, innovation and Linkages, Dr. K’tso Ngargbu, said the partnership would create platforms for knowledge exchange, research opportunities, and academic advancement for both staff and students.
Dr. Ngargbu noted that the collaboration aligns with NSUK’s vision of improving global visibility, institutional ranking, and academic development.
He emphasized that artificial intelligence is now unavoidable, urging participants to contribute to the development of responsible and ethical AI rather than shying away from it.
In his remarks, the Dean of Postgraduate Studies, Professor Abdullahi Adamu Suleiman, expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor and the facilitator, Associate Professor Mustapha Muhammed Jamiu, for the partnership and advised participants to fully engage with the training and apply the knowledge gained to make meaningful impact in journalism and ethical AI usage.
Delivering the main lecture, Associate Professor Mustapha Muhammed Jamiu of the Department of Mass Communication, RUDN University, Russia, cautioned against the negative and unethical use of AI in academic work.
He warned students against total dependence on AI tools, stressing that misuse could lead to plagiarism and academic sanctions.
He further explained the advantages and limitations of digital tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and other AI platforms, noting that improper use may negatively affect research outcomes.
He also provided detailed insights into entrepreneurial journalism within algorithmic systems and its growing relevance in the media industry.
Also speaking, the Dean of Social Sciences and the Dean of faculty of Communication and Media Studies, NSUK, described the workshop as timely, especially for undergraduate and postgraduate students currently working on their theses, stressed that ethical AI usage has become a critical consideration in today’s academic environment.
The Coordinator of the Partnership and Collaboration, Dr. Santas Tsegyu, a Senior Lecturer and head of Department, Journalism and Media Studies, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, NSUK, explained that the initiative aims to empower students with digital communication skills and reduce overdependence on government or society for employment.
“The aim of this workshop is to expose our students to issues of AI integration, research, and ethical journalism”. ” This is why we partnered with RUDN University, Russia, to provide these vital trainings,” he said.
Lecturers and students, particularly from the faculty of Communication and media studies expressed excitement over the partnership, describing it as a welcome development.
Some students noted that the knowledge gained from the workshop would be applied effectively in their academic and professional pursuits.
