Nasarawa Politics: Yahaya Idris Urges Governor Sule to Rise Above Party Intrigues

A political commentator from Toto Local Government Area, Yahaya Idris, has advised Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, to look beyond internal party politics and focus on broader issues of equity, inclusion and public trust as discussions over succession begin to gather momentum.

In a statement he issued on Wednesday reflecting on upcoming 2027 elections, Idris argued that politicians who concentrate excessively on intra-party maneuvering often lose touch with the electorate.

According to him, such leaders tend to promote agendas that do not align with the real needs and expectations of the people, ultimately weakening their chances at the polls.

He also pointed to the enduring influence of ethnic and religious considerations in Nasarawa politics, noting that these dynamics have continued to shape electoral outcomes.

The Toto LG Blogger, suggested that this trend is less about the performance of leaders and more about a persistent lack of trust among different communities within the state.

Raising concerns about youth participation, Idris described young people as a largely neglected but critical segment of the political process. While they play significant roles during campaigns and elections, he said their post-election rewards are often limited to low-level political appointments, with many left without meaningful opportunities for long-term empowerment.

Turning to the issue of succession, Idris referenced Governor Sule’s reported position that his successor should emerge from Nasarawa West.

He argued that this presents an opportunity for the governor to demonstrate fairness and strengthen his legacy by supporting a candidate who reflects broader inclusivity, particularly from areas that have yet to produce a governor.

Within Nasarawa West, Idris highlighted two federal constituencies: Keffi/Karu/Kokona and Nasarawa/Toto. While the former has previously produced the state’s first elected governor between 1999 and 2007, he noted that Nasarawa/Toto Federal Constituency has never held the governorship position.

For reasons of equity and balance, Idris urged the governor to consider supporting a candidate from Nasarawa/Toto, arguing that such a move would promote inclusiveness and resonate positively with voters across the state.

Idris noted that decisions taken now will not only shape the immediate future of Nasarawa politics but also define how history judges the current administration.
