Delta State Governor, Rt Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has paid tribute to former Information Minister and political scientist, Professor Sam Oyovbaire, on his 85th birthday, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished public intellectuals whose contributions to governance and national development continue to resonate.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Asaba by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor praised Professor Oyovbaire’s distinguished career in academia, public administration and public service, saying his record had earned him national recognition and made him one of Delta State’s most respected elder statesmen.
Oborevwori said the professor’s unwavering commitment to democracy, peace and good governance had remained a source of inspiration, highlighting his leadership as Chairman of the Delta State Advisory and Peace Building Council as instrumental in promoting dialogue, stability and social cohesion across the state.
The governor also reflected on Oyovbaire’s tenure as Nigeria’s Minister of Information during the administration of former military President General Ibrahim Babangida, where he said the veteran academic played a significant role in shaping government communication and public policy.
He added that Professor Oyovbaire’s wealth of experience, intellectual influence and commitment to public service had continued to benefit successive administrations in Delta State while inspiring scholars, policymakers and younger generations.
“Professor Sam Oyovbaire is an exceptional scholar, accomplished administrator, respected statesman and leader whose life has been dedicated to the service of humanity,” the governor said.
Congratulating the elder statesman on behalf of the government and people of Delta State, Oborevwori wished him continued good health, peace and fulfilment, describing him as “a father figure, lifter of men and a great Nigerian patriot” whose enduring legacy would remain a guiding light for future generations.
