Just In: Federal University Lokoja  Establishes Medical Sciences Programme.

The Vice Chancellor, Federal University Lokoja, Professor Olafemi  Akinwumi has on Friday inaugurated a 17 man steering committee for the establishment of Medical sciences programme.

Prof. Akinwumi while inaugurating the committee comprising of renown Medical Professors and experts drawn from several Universities and specialised medical institutions across the country, disclosed that the Senate of the institution has approved the establishment of  medicine and engineering programmes in the institution.

“Today, the University is kick starting the actualisation of the establishment of the medical sciences programme in earnest by inaugurating a steering committee to start a groundwork for the commencement of the programme”, the Vice Chancellor declared.

He expressed the appreciation of the Senate, Management and the entire University community to the two coordinators invited to put in place all that will be necessary for  the successful establishment of the programmes of medicine and engineering.

The Vice Chancellor, while commeneding the coordinators, said “their exciting presentations to the Senate has confirmed the confidence the University reposes in them to carry out these onerous assignment assiduously to the best of their abilities to the envy of other Universities in Nigeria, who may be expected to see the two programmes in the Federal University, Lokoja as models worthy of emulation and replication.”

He therefore thanked Professor Mike Ogirima of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) and Professor Abdulateef Onundi of the University of Maiduguri, who will be in charge of medicine and engineering programmes respectively.

The committee was mandated to produce a blue print for the establishment of medical sciences programme in the University through the provision of requirements needed to scale through the resource verification as laid down by the National Universities Commission (NUC), development of the the required curriculum to meet the standard best practice for the programme.

It is also charged with the responsibility to design a model that will not put the graduates at a disadvantage, if they want to go into academics and also to advice on how to attain the minimum manpower and staff required for the take off of the programme in the institution.

While they are to work towards adopting the federal Medical Centre (FMC), Lokoja as the Teaching Hospital, they should equally advise on any other matter that will assist in the successful establishment of the programme.

The Vice Chancellor therefore declared that the committee has three weeks to submit its report
