FCT Minister Approves Payment Of Minimum Wage To Teachers, Area Councils Staff.

Minsiter of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Muhammad Musa Bello, has approved the payment of the new National Minimum Wage (NMW) to primary school teachers under the Local Education Authority (LEA) and Area Councils Staff across the territory which takes effect from May, 2021.

The minister’s approval for payment of the new minimum wage, was contained in a letter from the Director of Human Resources of the FCDA, Mohammed Bashir, intimating the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), a copy of which was obtained by Global Times Nigeria, through the NUT Acting Secretary, Comrade Margerete F. Jethro, at the teachers house in Gwagwalada, on Saturday.

“I am directed to inform you that the ministerial committee constituted by the FCT admistration to carry out the above mentioned excercise had concluded the assignment and forwarded the report accordingly”.

“Thus, it is gratifying to note that after due consideration, the Administration has approved of payment of the new national minimum wage to LEA teachers and area councils staff with effect from May, 2021,” the letter said.

Global Times Nigeria, had reported that the FCT minister, Muhammad Musa Bello, had on January, 2021, ordered for screening of both the area councils staff and primary school teachers to enable the admistration ascertain accurate numbers of its strength.

The screening was carried out both NULGE and the NUT where 17, 000 teachers were screened during the excercise in February, 2021 while a ministerial committee later submitted its report.

Meanwhile, the union has said that the proposed resumption of its strike action slated for Monday, May, 3, 2021 by the primary school teachers and the commencement of solidarity strike by by the FCT secondary school teachers has been put on hold.

The acting secretary of the FCT NUT, Comrade Margerete F. Jethro, stated this while speaking with newsmen shortly at the end the emergency meeting of the State Wing Executive Committee (SWEC) of the union in Gwagwalada, on Saturday.

She said union’s decision to put the resumption of the strike action on hold was as a result of the renewed assurances and letter of commitment by the FCT admistration to ensure the implementation of the minimum wage is sustained.

“And in the event that the FCTA management reneged on its promise, the union will be compelled to reconvene by end of May, 2021 to take appropriate labour action,” she said.

“The SWEC in session appealed to all members (teachers) to continue with their legitimate duties as the union is poised to intensify more efforts in ensuring the improvement of FCT teachers welfare, ” she added.
