The Managing Director Hydro Power Producing Areas Development Commission ( HYPADEC), Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, has announced that riverine areas in 10 local government areas of Kogi state will soon benefit from the commission’s intervention programmes aimed at improving their quality of life.
Alhaji Yelwa also disclosed that the the Commission had earlier disbursed financial assistants to less privileged students from the affected areas who could not afford school fees as well as training school leavers for skills acquisition.
Speaking at the inauguration of the commission’s office complex in Lokoja, the Kogi state capital, the Managing Director, disclosed that a health out reach will be conducted across the affected local government areas, while all arrangements have been concluded to construct schools and health centres for the communities.
While promising to enlarge the Youths empowerment scheme, he added that beneficiaries would be assisted with tools after their trainings to enable them put to practice the knowledge they acquired.
According to the Managing Director, the Commission has organized a joint meeting with stakeholders of the Communities to dialogue on how to mitigate the annual flood disasters, especially that NIMET has alerted that this year’s flood may surpass the previous ones.
He also assured that all the riverine communities will be electrified and has equally instructed that the list of areas without electricity be forwarded to the commission for necessary action
Kogi state Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Victor Omofaiye, who represented the Governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello, noted with satisfaction the zeal and determination of the Commission to succeed in its assignment in Kogi state.
He said the support the state government gave to HYPADEC has formed the basis of its successful take off in the state, noting that the Commission has become a household name in the state.
A Traditional Ruler, the Ohimege Igu, Alhaji AbdulRazak Isa Koto, who graced the occasion, expressed gratitude to the Commission for impacting positively on the lives of the people.
While he commended the commission for rendering assistance to the people of Kogi state, the traditional ruler however urged the Commission to assis with preventive measures against future flooding.
