Nasarawa Assembly, NUDB Warns residents against blockage of drainages, waterways to stern flooding.

Stakeholders in Nasarawa State has taken further measures to avoid flooding and other natural disasters in the State.

Nasarawa State House of Assembly Committee on Urban Development and Regional Planning has advised the residents of the state not to build on waterways or block drainages in the interest of their safety, health, and guidance against impending flooding as the State is rated among those to experience flooding in the country.

Hon Suleiman Yakubu Azara, the Chairman of the Committee made the call when the management of the State Urban Development Board ( NUDB) appeared before the committee on its 2022 budget performance today in Lafia.

Azara said that building on waterways would cause flooding and would affect the health and safety of the people negatively.

According to him, citizens are advised to avoid building on waterways and channels to keep the environment safe from ecological problems

” We have invited you to know the budget performance of your board from January to June 2022.

” We will continue to support you to succeed,” he said

Azara has commended the management of the board for being up and doing in ensuring urban development in the state.

He has restated the committee’s commitment to synergize with the board to take the board to greater heights.

” One of the major disturbing areas and challenges giving the NUDB setback is lack of equipment and monitoring facilities as well as lack of staff at zonal offices”

“it also worries some the situation where NUDB contracts are not handled by the board especially payments of contracts, this need to be addressed urgently” he added.

Earlier, Engr. Mohammed Wada, the Managing Director of the board, has assured of the board’s readiness in tackling flooding in the state.

” We want to thank you and His Excellency, Gov Abdullahi Sule for supporting our activities to succeed,” he said

Wada also called on the people of the state to avoid building on waterways for the overall development of the state.

” I want to advise the people to avoid building on waterways and they should not block drainages.

” People should assist by clearing drainages and avoid dumping of refuse in water channels and canals,” he said.

The MD also called n the people to adhere strictly to buildings regulation to avoid their buildings and other structures being demolished.

He has restated his continued commitment to sensitizing the residents of the state about the danger of flooding.
