Unemployment Is One Of The Biggest Challenge In Our System – Onah of Abaji.

The Onah of Abaji and Chairman of the council of traditional rulers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) His Royal Majesty (HRM) Alhaji Adamu Baba Yunusa, has identified unemployment as one of the biggest challenge in the country’s system.

Alhaji Yunusa, spoke while presenting a paper during the FCT stakeholders meeting organized by Senator representing FCT, Senator Philip Aduda ahead of the forthcoming 1999 constitutional amendment, held at the International conference Center Abuja on Thursday.

He said the federal character was not fully applied to FCT indigenes across the federal government ministries, agencies and parastatals, which he said was not healthy and has contributed to FCT backwardness.

He said the appropriate percentage applicable to all states should be applied for FCT for the purpose of justice and fair play so that the young graduates would easily be absorbed into the system to reduce crimes.

According to him, the administrative structures and political system of FCT was also not clearly defined with the complete loss if second tier administration to streamline the working synergy between the area councils and the FCT mainstream.

He, therefore, called for the creation of additional senatorial districts, house of representatives seats and creation of additional area councils in the territory.

“Considering the rapid development increase in preparation and development of communities across the FCT, the need to create additional area councils becomes imperative.

This is important because for the purpose of bringing development to the grassroots and employment generation and poverty reduction as well as reduction of over dependence,” he said.

The traditional ruler also stated that the FCT indigenes were yet to benefit from the approved quota system as well as the universities and other tertiary institutions, saying there was the need to spell out clearly the position of the FCT indigenes and residents for the purpose of employment and admission accordingly.

Speaking ealier, the senator representing the FCT, Senator Philip Aduda, said the forthcoming 1999 constitutional amendment, which he said fourth amendment was being undertaking by the 9th assembly, which he said was an avenue for the natives of the territory to come together to present a common position for the benefit of the future generations.

“We need to aggravate diverse shades of opinions that will enable us deliver much needed amendment which will further enhance governance of this territory for the benefit of all of us,” he said.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council, Alhaji Adamu Mustapha, who is also the chairman of the FCT chapter of ALGON, said the issue of the FCT was a constitutional matter, saying there was the need for every prominent sons and daughters to go out and canvassed for belongs to them.
