Edo 2024: Coalition of Edo Student Comrades Demands Public Apology from Olumide Akpata
A coalition operating under the banner of the Coalition of Edo Student Comrades has called on former Labour Party governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata, to tender a public apology over remarks it alleges were made during the 2024 Edo State governorship election campaign.
The group said the apology had become necessary in the interest of accountability, political maturity and fostering mutual respect among stakeholders in Edo State.
In a statement made available to journalists, the coalition expressed concern over comments it claimed were capable of creating divisions and undermining constructive political engagement among young people in the state.
According to the group, political actors must recognise the influence of their public statements and ensure that campaign rhetoric promotes unity rather than deepening political differences.
Coalition Calls for Responsible Political Conduct
The coalition urged political leaders to embrace issue-based campaigns and maintain civility in public discourse, stressing that democracy thrives when disagreements are expressed respectfully and within the bounds of decency.
It noted that public office seekers have a responsibility to inspire confidence, promote peace and strengthen democratic institutions through their words and actions.
The student body maintained that an apology from Akpata would demonstrate leadership, accountability and a commitment to democratic values.
Appeal for Peace and Unity
The coalition also appealed to supporters of all political parties in Edo State to avoid inflammatory statements capable of heightening tensions, urging them instead to focus on the state’s development.
It called on youths to remain peaceful, law-abiding and committed to democratic participation while allowing constitutional processes to address political disagreements.
The group reiterated that its demand was not intended to promote hostility but to encourage responsible leadership and respectful political engagement.
Call for Issue-Based Politics
The coalition concluded by urging politicians across party lines to prioritise policies that address unemployment, education, infrastructure, healthcare and economic development rather than engaging in personal attacks or divisive rhetoric.
It maintained that Edo State’s progress depends on constructive dialogue, accountability and leadership anchored on integrity and service to the people.
