Kogi State Governor declares free education, covers WAEC fees for 18,734 students worth N600m

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Usman Ahmed Ododo, has approved the payment of 2024/2025 WAEC fees for 18,734 students enrolled in public secondary schools.

Hon. Wemi Jones, Kogi State’s Education Commissioner, disclosed during a press briefing in his office, Ministry of education that the state government will cover West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) fees to the tune of N600m.

The Commissioner noted that the payment aligns with the State Government’s legislative provision for complimentary examination fees for students enrolled in public schools.

According to him, legislation has been enacted, whereby the government assumes responsibility for funding all internal and external examinations for pupils in public primary schools.

The Commissioner commended Governor Usman Ahmed Ododo for building upon the legacy and foundation established by his predecessor, former Governor Yahaya Bello.

“In accordance with established regulations, we submitted a request to the Governor for approval to settle WAEC fees for 18,734 students for the 2024/2025 academic year.”

“Following this development, the Kogi State Government assumes payment of WAEC fees for students in public secondary schools.”

” In 2024, the State Government sponsored 15,033 students. This increase suggests a growing trend of parents transferring their wards to public schools, resulting in an enrollment surge of 3,700 students.”

“This government policy aims to enhance the quality of life for citizens, parents, and guardians. It also seeks to combat the issue of out-of-school children and ensure a 100% completion rate of education at that level.”

The Commissioner expressed gratitude to Principals who facilitated the government’s objectives last year, while cautioning non-compliant Principals of severe sanctions.

The State Government will soon cover the costs of JAMB and NABTEB fees for public school students, and also provide payment for the First School Leaving Certificate and Basic Education Certificate Examination.1
