Mauritius’ electoral commission announced on Tuesday that the final general election results indicated the Alliance de Changement, led by Navin Ramgoolam, secured 62.6% of the total votes.
The parliamentary election was held on Sunday, with incumbent Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth and his main rivals pledging to tackle the cost of living crisis affecting approximately 1.3 million people.
On Monday, Jugnauth acknowledged that his political alliance was likely to suffer a major defeat at the hands of Ramgoolam’s coalition, with Ramgoolam having previously served as premier three times.
Most of the country’s revenues come from its flourishing offshore financial sector, tourism, and textile industry.
Mauritius expects 6.5% economic growth this year, a decrease from 7% last year, but the benefits are eluding many voters.
Ramgoolam’s alliance campaigned on a promise to increase pensions, offer free transport and internet services, and cut fuel prices.
