Capital Market: Nigeria’s Missing Economic Stability Link

The fiftieth inaugural lecture, titled “Unlocking Wealth and Leveraging Entrepreneurial Knowledge Ecosystem: Understanding Capital, Harnessing Essentials,” was delivered by Uche Joseph Uwaleke, Nigeria’s first professor of capital market.

The inaugural lecturer pointed out that Nigeria’s resource richness and significant economic potential are compromised by weak infrastructure and a skills gap.

He said unlocking Nigeria’s hidden wealth Through the capital market will involve leveraging the market’s potential to mobilize, allocate, and grow the entrepreneurial knowledge ecosystem and in the process, foster a supporting environment that encourages public private partnerships.

Prof. Uwaleke, recommended that governments at all levels should deploy the right approach to incentives for capital formation, privatization of public enterprises via the capital market as well as optimization of resources in ways that guarantee value for money.

He maintained that these steps can help channel untapped resources into productive ventures through prioritizing pillar courses in tertiary education institutions.

Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, represented by minister of women affairs, IMAAN Suleiman Ibrahim, applauded Professor Uche Uwaleke’s impactful contributions to the development of Nigeria’s Capital Market.

 

The event was attended by dignitaries, including former Governor of Imo State, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, and Chairman, Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and other Related Matters, Senator Aderokunbo Abiru.

 

The Vice-Chancellor Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, explained, maintained that the Inaugural Lecture Series is an academic ritual of the University, which is mandatory for every professor to deliver, urging other Professors to join. Hence, following the terrain to promote innovation and research, just as she commended the inaugural lecturer for his commitment towards capital market system.

In their congratulatory messages, former Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and other Related Matters Aderokunbo Abiru, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Capital Markets Senator Osita Izunaso, and Special Adviser on Economy Matters, among other dignitaries, praised the inaugural lecturer’s accomplishments and encouraged the university management to provide necessary support for his continued success.
