Delta Governor Reacts to Ned Nwoko’s Allegations of Defection
By Yahaya Idris, Asaba
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has strongly denied rumors that he plans to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing such claims as laughable and baseless. He challenged Senator Ned Nwoko, who alleged the defection, to provide evidence for his claim, emphasizing that he has not approached anyone about joining the APC.
Nwoko, who recently defected to the APC, had stated publicly that Oborevwori wanted to join the APC but was not welcome, and predicted that the APC would unseat him in the 2027 elections.
However, Oborevwori’s aides, including the Director-General of the Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau, Fred Oghenesivbe, and Commissioner Charles Aniagwu, have consistently denied any plans by the governor to leave the PDP.
Despite the governor’s denials, some PDP leaders in Delta State remain skeptical and consider the defection rumors credible, warning that Oborevwori’s defection would be a betrayal of the party and the people of Delta State.
Nonetheless, the official position from the governor and his team is a firm rejection of all defection claims.
He challenged the senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Ned Nwoko, who made the defection claim, to provide the evidence to prove the claim.
Nwoko had, at the weekend, alleged that Oborevwori was seeking to join the APC, declaring, however, that the governor was not welcome.
The senator, who months ago defected from the PDP to the APC, made the remarks in Agbor, Ika Federal Constituency, on Saturday during the official defection of members of the Delta Unity Group, a socio-political organisation, from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC.
“Oborevwori wants to come to the APC, but tell him to stay where he is,” Nwoko said emphatically to a cheering crowd. “He will be defeated. We don’t want him in the APC.”
However, reacting on behalf of the governor on Monday in an interview with The PUNCH, the Director General of the Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau, Dr. Fred Oghenesivbe, challenged Nwoko to provide evidence to back his claim.
Oghenesivbe said, “We don’t have time for Ned Nwoko. We have spoken extensively on this issue before now, myself and even the commissioner, Charles Aniagwa, that the governor is not defecting
