#UGDecides2026: Bobi Wine Casts Vote Amid Poll Tech Glitches
National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, accompanied by his wife Barbie Kyagulanyi, cast his vote at Freedom Square in Magere, Wakiso District, on Thursday, January 15, 2026, as Uganda’s highly anticipated general elections kicked off nationwide.
The couple arrived amid tight security and a charged atmosphere, with supporters chanting “People Power” slogans in a show of solidarity for the musician-turned-politician’s bid to unseat long-serving President Yoweri Museveni.

Voting commenced at 7am across the country, but reports of logistical hitches, including delayed opening of some polling stations, have already cast a shadow over the process.
KyBefore casting his ballot, Kyagulanyi addressed journalists at the polling station, unleashing a scathing critique of the Electoral Commission’s handling of biometric voter verification machines, which he said had failed in several areas despite billions of taxpayer shillings poured into their procurement by the government.
“This is a classic case of corruption and incompetence; Ugandans paid heavily for these gadgets, yet on election day, they are nowhere to be found or simply not working,” he fumed, urging voters to remain patient but resolute.
He further expressed grave concern over the recent arrest of the NUP Deputy President for Western Uganda, describing it as a blatant attempt to intimidate the opposition and suppress the people’s will ahead of the polls.
The 2026 elections mark Bobi Wine’s second direct presidential challenge against Museveni, following his strong 2021 showing where he alleged widespread rigging.
Uganda deploys special forces around State House amid global tensions
With internet shutdowns reported in parts of Kampala and heavy security deployment, rights groups have raised alarms over potential voter suppression, while NUP flags the arrest of party officials as part of a broader clampdown.
As results begin trickling in from early polling units, the nation holds its breath for a contest that could redefine Uganda’s political landscape under the rallying cry of #UGDecides2026.
