A moving account by Oluchi Oparah has highlighted the compassion and unity that continue to define ordinary Nigerians after witnessing motorists and passersby come together to rescue the occupants of a vehicle engulfed in flames.
In a reflection shared on Monday, Oparah described the frightening scene of a burning car on her journey home but said what followed offered a powerful reminder of the kindness that still exists across the country.
According to her, motorists pulled over one after another while pedestrians rushed towards the scene without hesitation, determined to assist despite not knowing the identity of the vehicle’s owner.
“No one paused to ask who owned the car, where the person came from, what religion they practised, or which tribe they belonged to. Everyone simply wanted to help,” she wrote.
Woman’s Quick Response Helps Firefighting Effort
Oparah recounted how a woman stopped her vehicle, retrieved a fire extinguisher and joined others in battling the flames.
She described the gesture as a simple but powerful demonstration of humanity, saying it reflected the selflessness that many Nigerians display in times of crisis.
The collective effort of complete strangers, she noted, reinforced her belief that the country’s greatest strength lies in the character of its people rather than its natural resources.
‘The Nigerian People Are Not the Problem’
Reflecting on the incident, Oparah argued that ordinary Nigerians consistently demonstrate compassion, resilience and generosity despite the nation’s many challenges.
She said moments like the rescue effort reveal a united people willing to support one another beyond ethnic, religious or political differences.
“Our people are compassionate. Our people are resilient. Our people are generous. Our people are united in moments that truly matter,” she stated.
According to Oparah, beneath political disagreements and negative headlines is a nation filled with citizens who continue to believe in helping others.
Call for Leadership to Reflect Citizens’ Values
The incident also prompted a broader reflection on governance and national development.
Oparah expressed hope that Nigeria’s leaders would embrace the same urgency, compassion and sense of responsibility regularly displayed by ordinary citizens.

“Imagine what our nation could become if our leadership reflected the same compassion, urgency, selflessness and sense of responsibility that ordinary Nigerians demonstrate every day,” she wrote.
