The Eggon Political Forum has declared Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Rt. Hon. Dr. David Emmanuel Ombugadu, its consensus candidate for the 2027 Nasarawa State governorship election.

The declaration followed a meeting held at Albert Event Hall in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area.

The forum said it reached the decision after consultations and an assessment of six Eggon candidates contesting the governorship seat on different political platforms.

The candidates were Shuaibu Umaru Kubi of Accord, Gen. Nuhu Angbazo of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chris Mamman of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Ibrahim Kassimu Aboh of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), David Ombugadu of the PDP and John Tanko Kigbu of the Young Progressive Party (YPP).

According to a communiqué signed by Chairman Alhaji Umaru Gwamna, Sangarin Eggon, and Secretary Hon. Istifanus Dennis Abaku, the forum considered the candidates’ grassroots presence, popularity, party structures, political experience, previous records in public office, party stability and manifestoes.

The forum said consultations included Eggon stakeholders from the three senatorial zones, people in the diaspora, youth, women and elders, as well as representatives of other ethnic nationalities.

It said Ombugadu emerged as the candidate “overwhelmingly considered suitable” to represent the aspirations and interests of the Eggon people.

The forum appealed to the five other candidates to support the PDP candidate and urged Eggon people to embrace the decision.

It also called on other ethnic groups in Nasarawa State to support Ombugadu’s candidature.

But the declaration may not yet represent the final position of all Eggon stakeholders.

Friday Haruna, President of Eggon Youth Nationwide and the Eggon Cultural Development Association, said wider stakeholders were still expected to harmonise their positions.

Haruna said he attended the meeting after being invited to witness the proceedings and understand the outcome.

He said the political forum was entitled to take its decision but stressed that the wider Eggon stakeholder process remained ongoing.

“The Eggon are still going to sit and harmonise what they did, and it’s going to be pronounced, and everybody will know the direction,” he said.

Haruna also challenged governorship candidates to convince voters through their programmes, records and personal engagement.

The endorsement adds another layer to the increasingly active 2027 political contest in Nasarawa State, where candidates and political blocs are building support across the state.

Recent political reporting continues to identify Ombugadu as a major figure in the race.
