Ayere Concern Youth says Senator Sunday Steve Karimi received a warm welcome at the cultural celebration, contradicting a controversial online publication.
By Yahaya Idris, Kogi
Ayere Concern Youth has challenged a report alleging that Senator Sunday Steve Karimi was booed by youths during the 2026 Ayere Day celebration in Kogi State, describing the publication as a misleading account of the event.
The disputed report, published by Latest New Gists, carried the headline: “AYERE DAY: IJUMU YOUTH BOO KOGI WEST SENATOR KARIMI OVER POOR PERFORMANCE, INSISTS HE IS THE WORST SENATOR OF KOGI WEST.”
The publication alleged that youths expressed displeasure with the senator’s performance and that the situation subsequently resulted in a confrontation.
However, Ayere Concern Youth, in a statement responding to the report, presented a different account of the lawmaker’s reception at the cultural gathering.

According to the group, Senator Karimi’s arrival at the celebration arena was greeted with jubilation and enthusiasm from attendees, contrary to the impression created by the disputed publication.
The group further stated that the Asiwaju of Ayere Kingdom, Asiwaju Prince Dr. Olatunji Olusoji, personally welcomed the senator and led him around the event tents, where he exchanged pleasantries with dignitaries and other guests.
The group maintained that the reception reflected the hospitality and communal spirit traditionally associated with Ayere Kingdom.
Youth Group Calls for Responsible Reporting
Ayere Concern Youth expressed concern that inaccurate or insufficiently verified reports about politically sensitive events could generate unnecessary tension and undermine peaceful relationships within Okunland.
It called on the publishers of the disputed report to review their account, verify the circumstances surrounding the senator’s reception and issue corrections if inaccuracies are established.
The group also urged members of the public to exercise caution before accepting the allegations as established facts.
It stressed that journalism should be guided by accuracy, fairness, balance and verification, particularly when reporting events involving elected representatives and politically sensitive communities.
Call for Unity in Okunland
The group said Ayere Day should be recognised for its cultural significance and its role in promoting community solidarity rather than becoming the subject of avoidable political controversy.
It urged residents and political stakeholders to prioritise constructive engagement, peaceful coexistence and the development of Okunland.
