ALGON Crisis Deepens Over Illegality, Diversion of Fund, As Member Petition Presidency, EFCC.

The Association of Local Government of Nigeria, (ALGON), has been engulfed by serious crisis as members of the association have petitioned the Federal Government seeking the arrest of its President, Mr. Alabi Akolade David over alleged misappropriation, diversion and laundering the association’s funds amounting to over 5 billion Naira.

In a petition dated 5th, May, 2021 and addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari signed by Mr. Adeola Adedipe of Alpha & Rohi Chambers, Solicitor to the aggrieved members, noted that the embattled President of ALGON was  ordinarily not qualified to be in that position by virtue of section 5 of the Constitution of the Association, pointing out that Alabi Akolade David is even not chairman of any local government area in Nigeria.

While stating that, Alabi Akolade David is the chairman of Bariga Local Council Development Area ( LCDA), the petition noted that the LCDAs are not known to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The petitioner further stated that the current position of Law, as laid down by the Supreme Court in Attorney General, Lagos State versus Attorney General of the , Federation ( 2004) 18 NWLR ( pt. 904) 1 and also by opinion written from the office of the Honourable  Attorney General of the Federation were attestation to the claim.

The petition called for the immediate arrest of Mr. Alabi Akolade David and cronies for misappropriation, diversion and laundering of funds belonging to the ALGON.

Mr. Adedipe said it become necessary to file the petition bearing in mind that the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON is a very sensitive body, which superintends over the affairs of the 774 Local Government Areas that were recognized by the law as the ones that supposed to form membership of the Association.

The Petitioner further disclosed that Mr. David was removed on the 30th May, 2020 by the General Assembly of ALGON where  resolutions were reached including the ratification of removal of Mr. David from office as President of the Association.

Mr. Adedipe further disclosed that the NEC of the Association ordered voiding of official documents or any action taken by Mr. Alabi Akolade David of which an interim Management Committee was set up to conduct Presidential election within six months.

He said despite the lawful action ordered by the general Assembly of the association, Mr. David has continued to carry out the duties of office as President of ALGON unlawfully.

Similarly a group under the umbrella of Concerned Grassroots Government Advocates has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC to investigate Mr. Alabi Akolade David for opening an illegal Account with the First Bank with number 203479191 in the name of the Association (ALGON) and diverted the sum of 5 , 240, 516 , 186.21 into it .

The fund was alleged to be Proceeds from the over deduction of tax burden by the Federal Inland Revenue Service ( FIRS) accrue-able to the entire 774 Local government areas in Nigeria.

Another group, coalition Against Corruption, CAC also brought to the notice of the EFCC the monumental corruption taken place in ALGON under the Leadership of Mr. Alabi Akolade David and his group

Efforts to reach David proved abortive as his line was switched off and a text sent were not responded to.
