Nze Chikwe Esiaga, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Abia state and former member of the House of Representatives, has frowned the appointment of Senator Mao Ohuabunwa as the Chairman of the Governing council of University of Port Harcourt by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
While criticizing the appointment in a letter addressed to the Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), Esiaga claimed that Ohuabunwa is a card carrying member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party and should be relieved of the nomination.
According to him, “It is one of the ironies of partisan-politics in Nigeria that a card carrying Member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has been given a position meant for Abia State by APC-led Federal Government as if we are running a government of National Unity.
“Senator Mao Arukwe Ohuabunwa was PDP Senatorial Candidate in 2019 and 2023 Senatorial elections and he was roundly defeated by Senator Orji Uzo Kalu of APC in Abia North Senatorial District.
“To the best of my knowledge and as far as my memory serves me right, Senator Mao Arukwe Ohuabunwa has never seen anything good in APC government of the Federation and one wonders why he should be given a slot meant for Abia state APC”.
The ex-lawmaker queried “Does it mean that there is no eminently qualified person in Abia APC to be so appointed instead of giving it to known enemy of APC government or is this another attempt to further weaken APC in the state?
“Whoever that nominated Senator Mao Arukwe Ohuabunwa for this position does not wish Abia state well and this appointment is not in the best interest of All Progressives Congress,”Esiaga maintained.
The southeast party stalwart pleaded the Presidency to correct the abnormality which according to him, is capable of sending disheartening and dangerous signals to party faithfuls in Abia state.
