Edo 2024: This is Our Chance – Asuelimhen

Since the return of democracy in 1999, Edo Central has produced a governor for only 18 months. In the past 24 years, Edo South has ruled for 16 years, while Edo North has governed for 8 years. This disparity has amplified the call for a governor from Edo Central.

Presently, two of the three major political parties have nominated candidates from Edo Central: Barr. Asue Ighodalo of the PDP and Monday Okpebholo of APC.This development significantly increases the likelihood of the next governor emerging from Esan Land.

However, there are concerns and variables that trouble any thoughtful analyst. One such concern is the candidacy of Barr. Olumide Akpata from Edo South, representing the Labour Party.

In these desperate times, we cannot afford to let this golden opportunity slip away. Our best strategy is to unite behind a consensus candidate to avoid splitting our votes and ultimately losing out. We must choose a candidate from Esan Land who possesses the competence, experience, and ability to follow in the footsteps of Esan greats like Prof. Ambrose Alli, Tony Anenih. Admiral Augustus Akhonmu, Chief Tom Ikimi, just to mention a few.

In this regard, Asue Ighodalo is our consensus candidate. He is our best choice moving forward. I extend my heartfelt gratitude for the unanimous and full-chested support that our brothers in Edo North and Edo South demonstrated through their overwhelming votes for Asue Ighodalo in the PDP primaries and the ongoing campaign rallies.

This support is indicative of our ability, as elites and brothers, to see the bigger picture and prioritize the needs of all above the desires of a few.

We call on the elders of Esan Land to ensure we do not squander this opportunity. The overwhelming support for Asue Ighodalo was evident in the PDP primaries, where he swept all votes in Edo South, Edo North, and Edo Central.

In the words of James Ene Henshaw, “This is our chance.” Let us seize it.

Hon. Engr. Clement Asuelimhen is the Chairman of Igueben Local Government Area Council.
