Cabinet reshuffle looms as Tinubu set to sack underperforming Ministers

Reports indicate that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is planning a second major overhaul of his cabinet.

According to reports, this will entail potential replacements for several ministers, Directors-General (DGs), and Managing Directors (MDs) of federal agencies and parastatals.

A presidency insider revealed that the move is a strategic step towards repositioning the administration and enhancing performance in critical areas, as part of a wider plan.

Although no official announcement has been made, the proposed reorganization is anticipated to affect both political appointees and key technocrats within the federal government.

“The presidency’s authority is profound; no individual is immune to the president’s influence. Once a person becomes a liability, they are quickly shown their way out, the source said.”

The source further suggested that the ongoing cabinet review may have been a motivating factor for the president’s recent trip to France, where he was able to engage in discussions without the distraction of political lobbying.

Global Times Nigeria reports that in October 2024, President Bola Tinubu conducted a significant cabinet reshuffle, where he sacked five ministers, appointed seven new ones, and reassigned ten others to new portfolios.

The changes included renaming the Ministry of Niger Delta Development to the Ministry of Regional Development, abolishing the Ministry of Sports, and merging the Ministries of Tourism and Arts and Culture into one.

This reshuffle aimed to enhance efficiency amid economic challenges and public dissatisfaction with some ministers’ performances.
