Umahi Challenges Peter Obi to Compare Achievements in South East

By Yahaya Idris, Abuja

Minister of Works and former Ebonyi State governor, Senator Dave Umahi, has declared himself the true political voice of the South East, challenging Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to a public debate on their respective records and contributions to the region.

In a video aired on August 17, 2025, Umahi criticized Obi’s claims of having overwhelming support in the South East, stating that no one should make such claims without being tested against their performance. He asserted that when the presidency eventually rotates to the South East, he should be at the forefront because of his achievements as governor and minister.

Umahi also emphasized that all South East governors are united in their support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 and highlighted ongoing federal infrastructure projects in the region.

He insisted on the need for strategic political alliances rather than relying on sentiment to achieve national leadership goals.

He invited anyone who doubts his political standing to debate publicly, confident that his record and performance set him apart.

Thus, Umahi positions himself as a leading figure in the South East, directly challenging Peter Obi’s political influence and urging for a discussion based on tangible achievements rather than claims of popularity.

“All the governors of the South East are supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Umahi said. “I saw a man running his mouth, saying the only place he has 100% support is the South East, and he was talking about my brother, Peter Obi. If the presidency comes to the South East, I should be at the forefront because of my performance,” he added.

The former governor boasted of his achievements in Ebonyi State, stating that God used him to transform the state and that his record stands tall when compared with other leaders from the region. “I have asked for debates. Let us compare governor to governor, what we have done for the South East. I beat my chest and say, God has used me, and President Tinubu has used me better, to the benefit of the South East,” he declared.

Umahi also reaffirmed the political alignment of South East governors with the current administration, noting that states such as Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Abia are all witnessing the commitment of their leaders to President Tinubu. He urged the region to focus on building alliances rather than relying on sentiments for political advancement.
