Labour Party Candidate Okereke Names Bintu Konto as Running Mate for Nigeria’s 2027 Election
Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Dr. Chibuzo Okereke has announced Hajja Bintu Konto as his running mate for Nigeria’s 2027 general election, describing the choice as one based on competence, integrity and public service.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Okereke said Konto’s nomination had been selected and ratified by the party’s leadership, adding that the decision aligned with the Labour Party’s commitment to inclusive leadership and merit-based appointments.
According to Okereke, Konto’s background as a nurse, public health specialist, humanitarian and development expert made her well suited for the role.
“The decision was guided by only one consideration: the best interests of Nigeria and the Nigerian people,” he said.
Okereke said his campaign would be anchored on what he described as the “Nigerians First” vision, which he said prioritises the welfare, security and prosperity of citizens while promoting leadership based on competence rather than ethnicity, religion or gender.
He argued that Konto’s selection reflected the party’s belief that women should have greater opportunities to occupy senior leadership positions based on merit.
“The choice of Hajja Bintu Konto reflects this philosophy. She was not selected because she is a woman. She was selected because she is exceptionally qualified, eminently capable and fully prepared to serve Nigeria with distinction as Vice President,” the statement said.
The Labour Party candidate also called for greater participation of women in governance, saying sustainable national development requires the full involvement of both men and women in leadership and decision-making.
Okereke thanked the party’s leadership for endorsing the ticket, including the party’s National Leader, Dr. Alex Otti, National Chairman Senator Nenadi Usman and National Secretary Rt. Hon. Iheanacho Obioma, for what he described as their support throughout the selection process.
He pledged that, if elected, his administration would focus on strengthening public institutions, expanding economic opportunities and restoring public confidence in government.
The announcement comes as political parties continue preparations ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election.
