SDP Commends INEC for Extending Deadline for Presidential, National Assembly Candidate Uploads

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for extending the deadline for the upload of presidential and National Assembly candidates by an additional three days, describing the decision as a demonstration of fairness, inclusiveness and commitment to Nigeria’s democratic process.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Chairman, Prof. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe, the SDP expressed gratitude to INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan for approving the extension following an appeal by the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC).

The commission had initially scheduled the upload exercise to end on Saturday, July 11, 2026, but has now extended the deadline to Tuesday, July 14, 2026, giving political parties more time to complete the submission of their presidential and National Assembly candidates.

According to the SDP, the decision reflects INEC’s responsiveness to the concerns of political parties and its determination to ensure a transparent and inclusive electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party noted that the extension would allow political parties to resolve outstanding administrative issues that affected the nomination process. It added that the first three days of the upload exercise, which began on June 26, 2026, were largely lost due to circumstances beyond the control of political parties, making the additional period necessary.

“The extension provides political parties with a valuable opportunity to complete the upload of their candidates and address outstanding administrative challenges,” the statement said.

The SDP also praised the leadership of IPAC, led by Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, for what it described as constructive engagement and effective representation of the interests of all registered political parties.

According to the party, the successful intervention by IPAC highlights the importance of dialogue, collaboration and mutual respect among key stakeholders in Nigeria’s electoral system.

The party expressed confidence that the cooperation between INEC and IPAC would strengthen public confidence in democratic institutions, promote greater collaboration among political actors and contribute to the continued growth of Nigeria’s democracy.

The party also prayed for divine wisdom and strength for the leadership of both organisations as they continue to discharge their responsibilities in the nation’s democratic development.
