Labour Party Unveils Hajja Bintu Konto as 2027 Vice Presidential Candidate

The Labour Party has officially unveiled Hajja Bintu Konto as its vice presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, pairing her with the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Chibuzo Okereke.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Saturday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, who said the decision followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders across the party.

According to the statement, the party described the Okereke-Konto ticket as one that reflects competence, integrity, inclusiveness, patriotism and a commitment to public service.

The Labour Party said Hajja Konto is a seasoned public health expert, humanitarian leader and development practitioner with more than three decades of experience in healthcare delivery, humanitarian intervention, community development and stakeholder engagement.

The statement noted that before her retirement from Catholic Relief Services (CRS), she served in several strategic leadership roles, including Community and Government Liaison Programme Officer, where she coordinated engagements with government institutions, traditional rulers, civil society organisations and local communities on health, nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and humanitarian programmes.

The party also highlighted her contributions to humanitarian and community mobilisation initiatives across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states, where she coordinated interventions that benefited internally displaced persons and other vulnerable populations.

A trained nurse, midwife, health educator and public health specialist, Hajja Konto holds a Master’s Degree in Public Health and has served as a lecturer in Community Health. She currently serves as a member of the Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) of the Global Fund in Nigeria and as National Treasurer of the Civil Society for Malaria Control, Immunization and Nutrition (ACOMIN), among other professional responsibilities.

The Labour Party said her extensive experience in governance engagement, humanitarian coordination, women’s empowerment, conflict-sensitive programming and public policy implementation, coupled with her proficiency in English, Hausa, Kanuri, Shuwa, Fulani and Bura languages, makes her well-positioned to contribute to national leadership.

The party further stated that her nomination reflects its commitment to gender inclusion, national unity and merit-based leadership, adding that the Okereke-Konto ticket represents a new generation of people-centred leadership focused on economic recovery, improved security, institutional reforms and national development.

The Labour Party called on Nigerians to support its presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 elections, expressing confidence that the candidates would provide purposeful leadership and address the country’s socio-economic and security challenges.
