Again, Nasarawa APC Loses Another Lawmaker from Toto LG as Hon. Muhammad Garba Isimbabi Defects to SDP
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State has suffered another political setback following the defection of the member representing Toto/Gadabuke Constituency, Hon. Muhammad Garba Isimbabi, to the opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Hon. Isimbabi announced his resignation from the APC during plenary at the Nasarawa State House of Assembly in Lafia on Monday, stating that his decision was taken in the best interest of his constituents and the overall development of Nasarawa State.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Dr. Danladi Jatau, formally announced the lawmaker’s defection after reading his letter on the floor of the Assembly.
In the letter, Hon. Isimbabi recalled that he was originally elected into the House on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
“You will recall that my Certificate of Return as a member of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly is in the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and I was sworn in in this hallowed chamber as a member of the 7th Assembly,” the letter read.
He explained that following the internal crisis that engulfed the NNPP, and after consultations with critical stakeholders in his constituency, he had returned to the APC.
According to him, recent political developments have now informed his decision to join the SDP.
“Mr. Speaker, in the spirit of my next political journey, Sir, I announce my defection from the APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), effective June 2026.
“My commitment to the development of Nasarawa State and the welfare of my constituency remains my top priority as I continue my legislative duties in this honourable House under the banner of the SDP.”
The latest defection comes barely one week after two other lawmakers—Hon. Mohammed Adamu Omadefu (Keana Constituency) and Hon. Ajegena Kudu (Nasarawa Eggon East Constituency)—also dumped the APC for the SDP.
With the latest development, the composition of the 24-member Nasarawa State House of Assembly now stands at:
APC – 13 members
PDP – 7 members
SDP – 4 members
Assembly Receives Report on State Character Commission Bill
Meanwhile, during Monday’s plenary, the House received the report of its Standing Committee on Public Accounts on “A Bill for a Law to Establish the Nasarawa State Character Commission and for Other Matters Connected Therewith.”
Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Solomon Yakubu Akwashiki, presented the report, highlighting the objectives and key provisions of the proposed legislation.
The bill, sponsored by the member representing Awe North Constituency, Hon. Hudu A. Hudu, seeks to establish the Nasarawa State Character Commission to promote fairness, equity and balanced representation in public appointments and government institutions across the state.
Following the presentation, Speaker Dr. Danladi Jatau fixed August 31, 2026, for the House to deliberate on the committee’s report.
