Labour Party National Chairperson Senator Nenadi Usman has urged Nigeria’s political leaders to embrace patriotism, tolerance and issue-based campaigns as the country gradually moves toward the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the 80th birthday celebration of former Plateau State Governor and former Governor of the old Benue State, Senator Jonah David Jang, in Jos on Friday, Usman said Nigeria’s democratic progress would depend on the willingness of political leaders to place national interest above partisan and personal considerations.

She said healthy political competition remains essential in a democracy but warned against allowing electoral contests to descend into hostility, intolerance and divisions that could undermine national cohesion.
“The next election should not be a battle against fellow Nigerians. It should be a contest of ideas, competence and character. When elections are over, we must all return to the same Nigeria. That is why patriotism must always be greater than politics,” Usman said.
The Labour Party leader called on politicians to focus on policies and governance rather than personal attacks, arguing that Nigerians deserve leaders capable of fostering unity, inspiring hope and strengthening democratic institutions.
“Our political parties may be different, but our country is one. We owe future generations the responsibility of conducting politics without destroying the bonds that hold our nation together,” she added.
Usman also appealed for greater civility in Nigeria’s political discourse, urging political actors and their supporters to reject inflammatory rhetoric and embrace mutual respect throughout the electoral process.
“History does not remember those who shouted the loudest. It remembers those who built the strongest institutions, protected democracy and put their country first,” she said.
She stressed that democracy thrives where citizens and political leaders respect differing opinions and resolve disagreements peacefully.
“We must disagree without becoming enemies. Democracy flourishes where there is tolerance, respect for differing opinions and an unwavering commitment to peace.”
Reflecting on the occasion, Usman described Senator Jonah David Jang as a respected statesman whose decades of public service in both the military and democratic governance have left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s political history.
She said Jang’s career exemplifies discipline, courage, sacrifice and commitment to national service, first as a military officer and later as Governor of Plateau State and a senator.
“At 80, Senator Jonah Jang represents a generation of leaders whose lives remind us that public office is ultimately about service, honour and legacy. We celebrate not only his longevity but also his enduring contributions to nation-building.”
Usman prayed for the elder statesman’s continued good health, strength and many more years of service to the nation.
The event drew political leaders, traditional rulers, associates and well-wishers from across Nigeria who gathered in Jos to celebrate the former governor’s 80th birthday and his contributions to public service.
